¹⁰ Viola Fast Utt, daughter of Waitman and Delia Fast, was born at Smithtown, WV, January 17,1869, and departed this life May 3, 1937, aged 66 years, 3 months and 16 days.

The family came to Braxton County in 1883 and settled near Sutton, where she was united in marriage to Robert Utt on December 14, 1885. To this union were born thirteen children, ten of whom survive. The husband and three children preceded her to the Glory Land. The surviving children are William E., Oras V., and Dallas B. of Roseville, Michigan; Harry F. of Flint, Michigan; Mrs. Luther (Ethel) Gerwig, Exchange; Mrs. Goldie Ellison, Glenville; Mrs. Lee (Ella) Gillispie, Richwood; Mrs. W. M. (Ruby) Hudkins, Little Otter; Mrs. Worthy(Macel) Wilson, Copen; and Mrs. Denver (Thelma) Howell, Pontiac, Michigan. One sister, Mrs. H. C. (Iva) Fox, Frametown, and four brothers, Harry Fast, Florida, Herman and Howard Fast, of Charleston, and Fletcher Fast, of Clay also survive, besides a large number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

One sister, Mrs. Hampton Riffle and one brother, Rufus Fast, preceded her to a better clime.

Early in life Viola professed faith in Christ and after her marriage united with the Rider N.E. Church, of which she remained a faithful and active member until she was called to her reward. The day be fore her death she told relatives and friends that she was a peace with God and the world.

For the past two years she had been an invalid and almost helpless, but she bore all her suffering heroically, and never wavered in her faith in God. She quietly slipped away, while sitting in her chair without a struggle or a pain and is now in the presence of her Savior wearing her crown with many stars which she has earned by her untiring efforts in doing her Master's will.

Her husband died in 1912 leaving the responsibility of rearing and training this large family on her shoulders. This she did with an heroic spirit and was never too busy to attend to Christian duties in helping those in sickness and distress. She was a faithful attendant at church as long as she was able to go, and many persons can say, "Mother Utt's influence has caused me to become a Christian."

May God give us more such mothers, as Mother Utt was! Yes she is gone but her spirit, her influence will live on in the lives of others.

Children, prepare to meet your mother and make an unbroken circle of thirteen children around that sainted father and mother in the Glory World.

The funeral was conducted by Rev. A. Poling, of Gassaway N.E. circuit, ably assisted by the Rev. Jess of the Fairview U. B. Church. Her remains were quietly laid to rest in the Fairview Cemetery beside those of her husband and children, amid a large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends.
