NOTE - The position of the name of Susan Fast on this census record is interesting. Her age is listed as 13 making her the oldest child. But instead of listing her name first, her name is listed following the youngest child, a practice that usually means she had a different mother. In this case, it suggests that her mother was probably Lucretia Floyd and since she is the only child listed out of order, all other children are assumed to have been born to Ada Cave, the second wife of David Fast.

Many other researchers also show the mother of William Ernest Fast as Lucretia Floyd and not Ada Cave. None seem to cite any source information so it may be a matter of them all repeating the same mistake. What is interesting is that William is listed in the normal position with the other biological children of Ada Cave-Fast and not at the bottom along with his supposed full sister, Susan Fast. Why would one be listed separately and not the other, unless it was only Susan that was born to Lucretia Floyd ?

In addition, the other researchers that list William Ernest as being born to Lucretia Fast inexplicably also list Lewis Fast as being born to Ada Cave even though he is about two years older than William, at least according to the ages as shown on the 1880 census.

Some additional insight or perhaps more confusion into how many wives David had and which one came first may be given from information in World Family Tree Vol. 7, Ed. 1, Tree #1334 submitted by Sandra S. Shuster, 10821 Columbus Avenue West, Fostoria, Ohio 44830-3334 in which she stated "William was 8 years old when his mother died."

However, that statement is very confusing given the age of William as shown on the 1880 census. If his age was only 5 in 1880, then his mother died in 1885. The 1880 census shows his mother as Ada Cave, but Ada is alive and well in the 1900 and 1910 Census. So therefore the statement is either wrong, or the young age of William as shown on the census is wrong.

Sandra Shuster also submits a different birth date for William Ernest Fast as October 1870 which would make his age for the 1880 census as 9 instead of 5. This would also mean that his mother died in 1878 when he was 8 years old. This seems to fit much better in that his mother died BEFORE the 1880 census and therefore Ada Cave, shown on the 1880 census could not have been his mother. It does mean that William Ernest Fast's name probably should have been listed down at the bottom following his full sister, Susan. But if the 1878 death date is correct, then any children born prior to that date must also have been born to Lucretia Floyd. This would include Lewis F. Fast and probably Rebecca A. Fast, a fact seemingly ignored by most researchers.

This all presents one possible scenario for the marriage and births for David L. Fast:

Marriage to Lucretia Floyd about 1867
Birth: Susan Fast, 1867
Birth: William Ernest Fast, 21 Oct 1870
Birth: Lewis F. Fast, 1873
Birth: Rebecca A. Fast, 1877
Death (?): Lucretia Floyd, about 1878
Marriage to Ada Cave about 1878

Somewhat troubling with the above schedule is that following their young and tender marriage in 1867, David and Lucretia waited three years for the next child and then another three years for the next, and then 4 years for their final child. Usually, births during that time periods came at a much closer interval as evidenced by the births following his marriage to Ada Cave.

As I look at the ages of all of the children on the 1880 census, there does seem to be a space in the ages of the children, namely between Susan at age 13 and Lewis at age 7, a total gap of 6 years. This seems to suggest that ONLY Susan was born to Lucretia Floyd and that ALL the other children are properly listed on the census form as being born to Ada Cave. This would provide the following second scenario:

Marriage to Lucretia Floyd about 1867
Birth: Susan Fast, 1867
Death (?): Lucretia Floyd, between 1867-1870
Marriage to Ada Cave about 1870
Birth: William Ernest Fast, 21 Oct 1870
Birth: Lewis F. Fast, 1873
Birth: Rebecca A. Fast, 1877
Birth: David E. Fast, 1879
Birth: Ella Fast, abt 1880
Birth: Frank Fast, abt 1880
Birth: Bertha Fast, 03/1880
Birth: Oliver Fast, 09/1884
Birth: Mary E. Fast, 09/1877
Birth: Susannah Fast, abt 1890

Several of the ages on the 1880 census form are not correct. David's actual birth month and year are given on the 1900 and 1910 census form and they indicate that he was at least 4 years older than shown on the 1880 census (1847 versus 1851). As previously discussed, William Ernest Fast was 9 years old instead of 5 (1870 versus 1875).

But this brings us back to the statement that William Ernest Fast's mother died when he was only 8 years old. Such information from the statement does not fit into the second scenario at all. And the statement can fit into the first scenario but only at the expense of three other children changing biological mothers, large gaps in birth years, and a census enumerator who followed the rules for only one child and not three others. I suggest that the statement that William's mother died when he was 8 years old is totally erroneous. I also suggest that in spite of a few errors in listing ages, the 1880 census does correctly list the children and their biological mother meaning that ONLY Susan Fast was born to Lucretia Floyd.
