• His obituary was published in the Unknown newspaper on 14 July 2009 in Minneapolis, MN. Borden, Russell W. Age 77 years, Feb 13, 1932 - July 12, 2009, passed away after a long courageous fight against Asbestosis (Lung disease), peacefully Sunday July 12, 2009, at his home in Otsego, family by his side. Preceded in death by his parents, Harry T. & Marjorie A. (Lightfoot) Borden; daughter Joyce Ann Christensen and 1st grandson, Jonn Aaron Borden. Survived by, devoted wife of 58 yrs, Marian D. (Jendra) Borden; sons, Jon L (Deborah) of Duluth, Thomas M. (Olivia) of Eden Prairie, Jan A. (Ann) of Willmar, Kenton G. Christensen stationed in Korea; daughters, Bonnie K. (Chris) Walcome of Sartell and Pamela J. (David) Glass of St. Paul; 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Also survived by his sisters, Joan (Fred) Blomquist of White Bear, Jeanette Davis of CA, Gail Heinzen of Stillwater, Ann (Robert) Anderson of Wisconsin and Sue (Thomas) Hotchkiss of New Market and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Russell was a graduate of Robbinsdale High School, class of 1950, as was his wife Marian. In September of 1950, he started working for the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad, which was bought by the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad (C&NWRR). He served on the rip-track (repairing boxcars), also as a car inspector and car foreman. As a car foreman, he enjoyed the challenge of picking up a derailment any day, any time. He retired from the C&NWRR Feb 14, 1992. Upon retirement he worked at True Value Hardware of Elk River from March, 1992 until their closing. Russell enjoyed beekeeping, gardening and fishing trips to "The Pas", Manitoba, Canada, with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed being a father, grandfather and great-grandfather and a husband. Many thanks to the staff and nurses of Allina Hospice and Home Oxygen services; Dr. Erickson and Dr. Jeanne Nelson and many others. Funeral Service 11 AM Thursday at Dare's Funeral Home, 805 Main St., Elk River, 763-441-1212. Visitation 4-8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home and 1 hour prior to services on Thursday at the funeral home. Interment Orono Cemetery, Elk River, MN.
