⁶ Death of Dr. W. E. Rose '96 On Monday last Dr. W. E. Rose, druggist of Palmyra, Portage county, died suddenly, making a fatal mistake in dealing out aconite instead of whisky. The circumstances, as we learn them from the Register & Tribune, are about as follows: Dr. Rose is an old practicing physician and keeper of a drug store in Palmyra. Yesterday Mr. Canfield went into the drug store and asked for some whisky, stating that he was feeling unwell. The request was granted and Mr. Canfield went away. In a short time he returned and asked for another portion of whiskey. Dr. Rose poured out a small quantity of a liquid he supposed was whiskey handed it to Mr. Canfield, who said, "won't you take a little Doctor?" The Doctor said he would, and poured out a very small quantity for himself in another glass. As soon as they had swallowed the liquid Canfield said, "This is not like that which you gave me before." Dr. Rose glanced at the bottle and exclaimed, "My God! We have taken tincture of aconite, a rank poison." Canfield with great presence of mind, went to a water pail and drank a great quantity of water there from. Dr. Rose unmindful of his own condition, administered medicine to Mr. Canfield that caused him to throw the poisonous matter from his stomach. Dr. Rose appeared to be wonderfully worried, fearing that Canfield would not recover. He did not take an emetic, and in about one hour was taken with spasms. Dr. Alvi Baldwin was called, but could do nothing that would save the life of Dr. Rose, who died in about one hour and a quarter after drinking the aconite. Mr. Canfield recovered. There is no man in Palmyra who will be more missed in that community than Dr. Rose.
