  General Notes:

Whether King or Millard was his first name is not really known, but early Christening records give the name as King M. Lightfoot. It appears that most likely that Millard became his preferred given name during his adult years. Even his gravestone indicates "Millard K. Lightfoot".

Records seem to provide two different names for the wife of King Millard Lightfoot. An original marriage record gives the name of Letta Whalen (or perhaps Whelen or Wheadon). However some additional documents show her name to be Lida Johnson.

This true name for Lida Johnson is a bit of a mystery and confusing at the same time. King's first wife was named "Letta" which may sound very similar to the name "Lyda" or "Lida". However, the marriage to the first wife, Letta, was in 1890 and she had a birth year of 1871. That marriage record shows her surname to be Whelen, Wheadon, or various alternative spellings of the same all depending upon how the poor handwriting is interpreted.

When their first son, Bernie Lightfoot, was married in 1916, he gave his mother's name as Lida Johnson instead of the expected Letta (or Lida) Whalen. It could be possible that either Johnson or Whalen was the maiden name of his mother but then it might be possible that his father was married a second time. There is no document which proves a second marriage.

The 1900 US Census shows King's supposed 2nd wife with a name of Lida, a marriage date of about 1895, and her birth year was 1877. Additional census records from 1910 and 1920 give the name of Lida. A death record for a still-born son in 1898 shows the mother's name to be Ledia Johnson. The gravestone for King's wife buried along side of him has the name of Lyda.

Since none of the data matches exactly, I am assuming that Letta Whalen and Lida Johnson must be two different persons but when and where the second marriage took place is unknown.

The gravestone probably has his incorrect birth year, 1872 instead of 1870. All census records support the 1870 year as does the birth registration in Richland County, Ohio.

In addition, the groom's name was entered on the register as "William Lightfoot" instead of the expected "King Millard Lightfoot".
