 General Notes:
Previously, it was thought that Lydia's mother was Eliza Jane Spitzer, the second wife of Martin Lightfoot, but it is now believed that her mother was Barbara Caroline Spitzer, the sister to Eliza Jane and first wife of Martin Van Buren Lightfoot. In the 1900 US Census, Eliza Jane indicates that she had a total of 5 children and only 3 were still living. She lists three sons currently living with her which would have accounted for all of her living children and meaning that Lydia who was still living was not one of her children.
In addition, other census data indicates that the birth date of Lydia was about 1873. Her mother, Barbara Spitzer, did not die until April 1874 and her father, Martin, did not remarry until January of 1874. If those dates are correct, it would mean that Martin and Barbara were divorced and he soon remarried Barbara's sister, Eliza Jane Spitzer, just months before Barbara's death.
