Early on his given name was usually stated as George but as he got older, he seemed to prefer the nickname Guy. Evidence also shows that the use of his middle name of Earl was changed to Elmer and he occasionally used only the name of Elmer.

In 1918, he registered for the World War I Draft in San Francisco using the name Guy Elmer West. His occupation was an un-employed farmer. He listed his closest contact as his wife, Harriet Eona West with her address as Three Oaks, Michigan. Strangely, there was another Guy Elmer West born on the same exact day of 6 Mar 1884 but his Local Exemption Board for the Draft Registration was in Chicago, Illinois. That Guy Elmer West was married to Luella Be Ment.
