General Notes:
The Moses family record state that Jefferson Davis Moses was a soldier in the Confederate States Army in the war between the states. He enlisted at Lewisburg, VA on 27 Jan 1862, Co. K, 14th Regiment, Virginia Cavalry. On Jan. 29, 1863 he was transferred to Co. E, 60th Reg. Va. Inf. and on the roll of that Company dated April 30, 1863 he was reported: "Deserter, went home on furlough of 20 days March 2nd and never returned." His name is not borne on subsequent rolls on file which cover period to Dec.31, 1864, and no later record as a member of this organization has been found.
Stories are still told in the family about the hardships and trials at that time and how the women, who were left at home while their men folks were in the armies, had to hide their provisions in woodpiles and other places, as the homes were often raided by soldiers for food.
It is claimed in the Moses family that Jefferson Davis Moses, as was also his brothers, sympathetic to the Federal Government, but was compelled to join the Confederate States Army as Greenbrier County was still a part of Virginia. When Greenbrier County joined the other Western counties and became a separate state in 1863, he then was under the jurisdiction of West Virginia and the people thereof, for the most part, were Federalists. This would account for him being called a "Deserter" from the Confederate Army.
After the Civil War Jefferson Davis Moses settled at Grand Rapids, Michigan (about 1866). He worked in a saw mill and died there from injuries which he received at the saw mill. His age at time of death in 1870 was 35 years. -----------------------------------------------------
