Although most researchers conclude that his birth year was in 1856, there remains some doubt in spite of his gravestone having that year on it. His 1900 US Census stated "March 1855", his 1910 US Census provided a year of about 1858, and his 1920 US Census provided a year of about 1854. His Christening record from the Evangelical Lutheran Church provided a birth date of 2 Feb 1855.
