bullet  General Notes:

Source: Francine Ahalt Strayhorn (Daughter), 6104 Knight Place, Greensboro, NC 27410:

Frank remembers spending summers on the homestead farm (built by his Great Grandfather, Matthias) with his "Grandpap", Joshua Dawson and Grandmother, Laura. Frank graduated from Colgate University in 1931, and from Yale University in 1933 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. In 19 36 he was employed by Western Electric Company in Cicero, Illinois. At that time, he was living in Downers Grove, Illinois with his wife Marie, and their daughter Nannette. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club, S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. (barber shop singing chorus) and the local school board. In 1950 he was transferred by Western Electric to the Burlington, North Carolina plant and the family, now including Francine and Laura, moved to Greensboro, North Carolina in March, 1951. Frank retired at age 60 from Western Electric, after 34 years service, in August, 1970. Shortly after "retirement", he went to work doing water searches for Bainbridge & Dance, a nearby well drilling company, and later took over meter reading in many housing areas for Hydraulics, Ltd., a new company formed from the latter. His wife, Marie died unexpectedly from cardiac arrest on March 19, 1975. Frank continues to work for Hydraulics, Ltd., reading water meters, etc. He is very active with the S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A., Greensboro Tarheel Chorus, where he is a member of the chorus as well as having sung bass in a Barbershop Quartet, "The Four-Tune-Nuts". He also has continued to sing regularly with the church choir (3/94).

He continued with his "second career", reading water meters for a private company and doing all of his own driving, until late 1998 (age 88.) He also continued to participate in his church choir and barbershop chorus well into 1998. In February, 1999, he was diagnosed with Multiple myeloma, centered in his vertebrae - he showed three badly degenerated bones in his back. This is a cancerous invasion, and after going through both radiation therapy and chemotherapy, Frank finally lost his battle, and he died on July 3, 2000. He would have been 90 years old the following month, and all who knew him agreed that he was, and would continue to be "a hard act to follow." (09/06/2005)
