Roy was a bomber pilot in World War II, and continued his career with the U.S. Air Force until he retired. After retirement, Roy and his wife, Franoise, settled in Reston, Virginia, where he went into agriculture, developing a Christmas tree farm, and cultivating ivy in his greenhouses for sale to landscapers. He built his own solar heated barn entirely alone (1994).
