NOTE - The age comparison between Sarah's mother, Martha, and her own husband are interesting. Charles B. Powell was born in 1836 and the mother of Sarah, Martha, was born in 1827 making him less than 10 years older than she. The reason is that Martha married and gave birth to Sarah very young and Sarah ended up marrying a man that was 13 years older than she.

bullet  Marriage Notes:

Looking only at the 1880 and 1900 census records, one would have difficulty in assigning parentage to the first 4 children, all of whom were listed with a surname of Powell instead of Smith. Most researchers assign the father of these children as Daniel Smith, in a marriage to Sarah Arnspiger that has no source citations to prove a marriage ever took place.

There is another possible answer and that would be that these 4 "Smith children" were actually fathered by Charles B. Powell but by a different mother, meaning that he would have been married prior to Sarah Frances Arnspiger and that they were therefore step-children to Sarah.

However, the 1900 census indicates that Sarah gave birth to a total of 8 children of which 7 were still alive. In order to get to a total number of 8 children, you'd have to include these 4 "Smith children" born before her marriage to Charles B. Powell in 1878 and also include one infant death or stillbirth that is yet unknown.

The 4 "Smith children" would seem to be problematic because of the lack of any source citation to prove a marriage to Daniel Smith. Fortunately, the 1870 census does show Daniel Smith, his wife Sarah, and their first daughter, Emma, born in 1868. This would seem to be proof enough that these first 4 children were indeed born to Daniel Smith and Sarah Arnspiger. They must have divorced sometime after the birth of their 4th child in 1876 and the remarriage of Sarah in 1878 to Charles B. Powell. It is not known if these 4 "Smith children" were formally adopted by Charles B. Powell, but they were listed with the Powell surname on the 1880 and 1900 census records.
