bullet  General Notes:

There is one thing that I haven't seen addressed by any other researchers and it has to do with how or why he was named Barton Lamar. I find it incredulous that he lived his entire life and died in Larmar Township, Barton County, Missouri seemingly the source for his name, yet we are told that he was born in Fulton County, Illinois before his parents ever moved to Missouri or probably ever heard of the town of Barton in Barton County, Missouri.

My own theory would be that his parents may have visited a future homesite in Barton County, Missouri and returned home to Illinois. Shortly thereafter, his mother gave birth and the parents liked the name of their future homesite so much that they named their son after the location. One other possibility is that he was really born in Barton County, Missouri instead of Fulton County, Illinois as the 1880 census and other researchers seem to indicate. Note that the next youngest child was definitely born in Barton County, Missouri and not in Illinois. Apparently no one seems to know the exact year in which the parents moved from Illinois to Missouri.

Yes, all purely speculation but otherwise it is one huge coincidence. (Brian L. Lightfoot)

Update --- Ruth Jones reports that they traveled by wagon in 1870 over land and frozen rivers to Lamar Township, Barton County, Missouri and lived in tent for several months. William became ill so they returned to Illinois until 1872. In 1872, returned to Missouri. Hauled lumber from Kansas and built home. Residence in 1899 was Lamar Township, Barton County, Missouri.

This still does not explain why Barton Lamar Fast got that name when he was born in 1865, a full 5 years before the parents first ventured into Missouri. Perhaps the parents had traveled earlier than 1870 but those circumstances now make the namesake somewhat clearer.
