(In letter From Lorinda (Verkins) Lardino to Betty Roeseler
re: Kramer / Possin genealogy, dated 3-12-1989, and cc: to Robert Westphal)

..."Minnie Northup I knew well as a child. I immensely enjoyed Uncle Norris and Aunt Min. Grandpa installed electricity on their farm in Trempealeau in the 1950s. Still chopped firewood for the wood stove in the 60s and used an outhouse. They had chickens and grew popcorn by the bushel. The 3 room house had linoleum floors and a big wood box. The two rocking chairs were worn flat on the bottom and flanked a big old floor model radio. The whole town had a 100th birthday party for Norris in 1968, same as a 50th anniversary in 1965. Their only child, Gordon, died of a brain tumor in Minneapolis in 1963. Min and Norris spent a lot of time staying with us while Gordon was hospitalized at the University of Minnesota. Norris helped my grandparents build the 2nd house in the early 1950s. They tell a story that I was about 4 years old; I walked up behind Norris unnoticed as he shoveled gravel. He spun around for another shovel full and narrowly missed taking off my head with the shovel. It was a sorry day when Gram told me his daughter (from a previous marriage) put them in a nursing home. She didn't think they should live old-fashioned any more. Minnie died in 3 months."
----------------------------------------

(From Martha (Drugan) Westphal, 3-2003):
"I remember visiting my grandma (Kramer) in Trempealeau when I was a child ...my brothers and sisters and I would often walk to town with her and aunt Minnie. While we walked, I can remember grandma and aunt Minnie speaking German."
----------------------------------------

(From Robert Westphal, Jr., 3-2003):
"While on vacation with my family in 1969, I had the good fortune to spend time with my uncle Eli and Aunt Mattie in Trempealeau, as I routinely did on all our summer vacations. One morning uncle Norris and aunt Minnie came by to visit. Uncle Eli introduced me to uncle Norris, and, as I shook his hand, Eli said, "Well, Robby, how does it feel to shake the hand of a hundred year-old man?" I couldn't believe that Norris was over 100! He was a tall man with a slender build. Despite his age, he was in great shape, and didn't wear glasses or walk with a cane. I went with him and Eli into the garden and helped cut gladiolas that I later gave to aunt Minnie. I recall uncle Norris, while passing by a row of tomato vines, grabbing a few cherry tomatoes and popping them into his mouth and winking at me. I followed suit, and, to this day, have never tasted a tomato any sweeter. Aunt Minnie reminded me a lot of my grandma, but was somewhat quieter and calmer! We all sat together on Eli's front porch talking about gardening (which I loved), until "dinner" was served around 1 o'clock. Aunt Minnie and I went to Eli's outdoor water pump and filled a big tin pitcher with ice cold water to put the gladiolas in, that were the centerpiece of our table that afternoon. Uncle Eli indicated to me in a letter in January 1971, that Norris was the oldest living man in Trempealeau County."
