• Her obituary was published in the La Crosse Tribune on 27 February 2009 in La Crosse, WI. Audrey E. Thompson, 86, of La Crosse, passed peacefully into eternity Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, surrounded by loved ones in her home.
She was born at St. Anne's Hospital in La Crosse on March 20, 1922, to William Patrick Drugan and Lena (Zimmerman) Drugan. She grew up in Trempealeau, graduating from Healy High School in 1941. She met and married Forrest Richard Thompson that same year. He preceded her in death on May 18, 1981.
Audrey and Forrest resided in the Trempealeau area for several years, where Audrey helped to care for her mother. The family then moved to the North Side of La Crosse. Audrey worked for several years at Belscot Department Store, dedicating the majority of her life to being a railroad wife and mother. In 1969, the family moved to the shores of the Mississippi River, where her home was always open and welcoming to family and f riends.
Audrey enjoyed many years of bowling with her friends, participating in several different leagues in the area. She was an avid crotchetier, blanketing her beloved children and grandchildren with her talent and love. She enjoyed numerous trips to northern Wisconsin and loved to play cards, especially with her lifelong best friend, Carman Card.
When Audrey became homebound, she was entertained by having "bling bling" pizza parties with her young friends.
She is survived by her sons, Gary (Thelma) Thompson of Bangor and Randy (Margaret) Thompson of Savannah, Ga.; daughter, Pat (Allen) Gerke of La Crosse; grandchildren, Jeff (Razel) Thompson, Daniel (Tammy) Thompson, Doug (Stacia) Thompson, Brad Shankey, Tammy Zinbauer, Todd, (Rhonda) Logging, Caroline Logging, Stephanie (Kevin) Timm, John Thompson, Lisa Bashlor and Tony (Sandy) Manny; great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Benjamin and William Thompson, Lacee Allen, Layne Johnson, Hannah Shankey, McKenna and Keegan Timm and Josh Kolterman; special little friends, MacKenzie and Roger Brosnahan; and nieces and nephews, Kent (Donna) Drugan, Gilha (Joseph) Pomponi, Wilda (Joseph) Williams, Joan (Chuck) Horton and Larry Daffinson.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Marcia, in July 1991; her grandson, Scott, in July 2003; brother, Kenneth Drugan; and sister, Edith Harris.
Special thanks to Gundersen Lutheran Hospice, nurse Teresa Helseth, home care provider Lisa Mengelt, the "bath ladies" and the telephone advisers for their comforting words. Also, our heartfelt thanks to Connie and Frank Fogel, Stephanie Timm, Brenda Mitchell, Lisa Buisman and all who helped in any way to make Audrey's wish of dying at home possible.
Memorial services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 1, at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson St., La Crosse. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 1 p.m. until time of services.
