David and Sarah had one son, Edward, who was born 15 years before they eventually married in 1887. For that reason, the illegitimate son bears the surname of his mother, Shafer, instead of Groff.

They also had a daughter, Anna C. who was not born until 1888 which was after they were supposedly born in 1887 but for some reason, that daughter also bears the surname of Shafer instead of Groff.
