Fred O. Barnes, 85, of Vaughan Road, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at his residence.

He was born in Big Springs, the son of the late William O. and Adeline Cunningham Barnes. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 88th Blue Devil Division in Italy and Africa. He served in three major campaigns and was awarded the Bronze Star. He attended Glenville State College and West Virginia Wesleyan College and graduated from West Virginia University, where he earned a master's degree. He taught at the University of Florence, Italy, following World War II, and also attended the University of Florence. He was a retired Calhoun County High School teacher with 39 years of service and a retired State Farm Insurance agent in Grantsville with more than 30 years of service.

Surviving are one son, Richard Barnes of Parkersburg; one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Smith of Grantsville; one brother, Shirley Barnes of Sissonville; two grandsons; four granddaughters; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Barnes, and one son, Dr. William Barnes.

Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Kevin Church officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
