Jefferson was born on 29 Jul 1840, along with a twin brother Jackson. Jefferson Martin devoted his active life to agricultural pursuits. Jefferson Martin married Elmira J. Fortney, daughter of David and Mary A. Leckrone Fortney, and four children were born, Mary A., Sarah A., Lillian F., the fourth child is unknown. Mary A. married John H. Martin who was of no relation. Sarah A. married Jacob E. or F. Cook. Lillian F. married Jacob R. Weaver. Jefferson Martin was liberal in his religious views. In politics Jefferson was active in the work of the Democratic Party, having served as Judge of Election and Constable for several years. Jefferson Martin was one of the Veterans of the Civil War having enlisted in 1861 in Company H, 87th PV 1, in which he served three years. At the end of his term of service he re-enlisted and served until the war was over. He was wounded at the battle of Cedar Creek.

• His obituary was published in The Patriot Newspaper on 3 June 1913 in Harrisburg, PA.

7 Dillsburg, June 2 -- Jefferson Martin, an aged Civil War veteran and well known farmer and trucker of Monaghan township committed suicide yesterday by hanging himself.
Mr Martin attended church services in the morning and was seen returning to his home about ten o'clock. Shortly after this Mrs Martin found him hanging by a rope to a beam on the loft of the hog pen, his body still warm with the assistance of neighbors the body was cut down but life was extinct.
Mr Martin had been in ill health for more than a year. He had served nearly four years in the army during the Civil war being out almost from the start to the end of the war. He is survived by his wife, and three daughters, Mrs John Martin of Siddonsburg, Mrs Weaver of Wellsville, Mrs Jacob Cook of Mechanicsburg. The funeral will be held on Wednesday. The services to be held in Filey Church and burial will be made in the cemetery adjoining.
