bullet  General Notes:

E-mail from Keith A. Dull, 11 Jul 2001 and Jul 2002:

Sometime in the 1790s, John, Daniel, and William all moved to Baltimore County, North Hundred, near the town of Ruhl, Maryland.

The 1810 US Census says John was in Mine Run Hundred, but the census taker was not doing a good job that year. They were close to the border of North and Mine Run.

Adam Schmidt had a farm in North Hundred as did Georg Ruhl, who appears in Mine Run in 1810. Daniel Lightfoot resided in Baltimore County, North Hundred, Maryland in about 1797 until 1800 when he moved to Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania. In 1807, he moved to Monaghan Township, York County, (the portion that is now Carroll Township), Pennsylvania. He appears on the Poor Lists of Monaghan Township from 1824 to 1831. He also appears on the 1828 Poor List of nearby Franklin Township presumably in an attempt to collect twice. He also lied about the ages of his children in order to continue collecting relief for them (York County provided relief for children between 4 and 12). Chaterina died in York County between 1830 and 1834. In the Fall of 1834, Daniel moved his family to Wayne County, Greene Township, Ohio. He appeared on the 1840 census there, and died before 1850.

Daniel Lightfoot was an insolvent debtor in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania and was serving time for debt in the Cumberland County jail on November 4, 1822. He had a hearing for relief on December 10, 1822. It is a 6 page document that includes his signature. The handwriting on the original documents is difficult to read but to the best of my ability are translated below.

Email from Keith Dull 27 Aug 2015:

Daniel also appears to have served a term in the army. I found an enlistment record for him on Ancestry.com dated 1807. They shipped him off to New Orleans, but I can't tell if he served out the entire term of his enlistment. He wasn't noted on musters after 1807, and he was back in Pennsylvania by 1810. He must have enlisted in Northern Baltimore County, although it does not say it in the record. The man who enlisted him was Ninian Pinkney, who was stationed in northern Baltimore at the time he enlisted Daniel.

Interestingly, Pinkney witnessed a land grant for Thomas Sparks. Thomas Sparks was the brother of the Francis Sparks I mentioned in my last e-mail. I have been continuing my research into a possible Sparks connection. I have since discovered that Francis Sparks daughter, Penelope, appears to have died young, however Thomas Sparks daughter, Penelope did not. Thomas Sparks was enumerated beside John Lightfoot in Baltimore County, Mine Run Hundred, Maryland in 1810. There seems to be an increasingly good chance that Perneleper/Penelope Lightfoot was illegitimate, but of course I'm still digging for more information.

5 total in household

Assigning names to the numbers in this household is difficult. The first question to ask is exactly who was named as the Head of the Household. The census record shows "Daniel Lightfoot" but that does not tell up which one of the Daniels it was. There was the Daniel born in 1768 and his son, Daniel, born in 1811. They were probably living together at the time of this census. The elderly Daniel was widowed and the younger Daniel was married but with no children at the time. My best guess is that the elderly Daniel was named as the Head of the Household which means not only was the married Daniel living there with his wife but then the other numbers on the census record represented some of the unmarried children of the elderly Daniel were also living there.

The one young female aged between 15 and 20 could have been any one of three possibilities that fit that age group: Catharine (age 19), a daughter of the elderly Daniel; Susannah (age 17), the wife of the younger Daniel Jr; or Charlotte (age about 15), a daughter of the elderly Daniel. Most likely it was Susannah, the wife of Daniel Jr. The other daughters were either married or living elsewhere.

There was another young daughter of the elderly Daniel named Martha (age 5) but the census record shows no count for any females younger than 15. I cannot explain where Martha was at the time because she was later married in 1848. Perhaps it was just an error by the enumerator or else she was living elsewhere.

Another daughter of the elderly Daniel, Sophia, was about 37 years old and did not marry until later that year in 1840. She may have been indentured out or living as a servant with another family therefore is not listed with this family.

However, my feelings are that within this household were Daniel Jr. and his new wife, Susanna Arnsberger who would have been the one and only female shown on the census. Together the young Daniel and his wife were living with and caring for the elderly Daniel. This is supported by the fact that Susannah was most likely not present with her family according to the 1840 US Census for her father's household because it shows no females present in Susannah's age category which means she was most likely living with her husband at his family's household.

If the elderly male were Daniel, and two of the others were Daniel Jr and his wife, then that would account for 3 of the 5 persons in the household leaving only 2 other males, no doubt brothers of Daniel Jr.

Daniel Jr was one of the two males in the 20 to 30 age group. The other one would have been either John (age 25) or Samuel (age 23). Samuel was probably living with his master as he was indentured out to become a wagon maker so the other male was most likely John.

I'm not aware of any young Lightfoot males that fit the 15 to 19 age group; William was the youngest but it is believed that he was born in 1819 thus making his age about 21. So unless this is a previously unknown brother, I am unable to determine exactly who the young male could have been. William could have been mistakenly counted in the 15-20 group when he should have been in the 20-30 age group but because there are no other records for William, he had either died, moved away to be on his own, or was indentured out and living with his master.

Daniel married Caterina Salome Schmidt, daughter of Adam Gaedel Schmidt and Catherina Salome Dubs, about 1797 in Ruhl, MD.6 (Caterina Salome Schmidt was born about 1779 in Manheim Township, York County, PA 6 and died between 1830 and 1834 in Monaghan Township, York County, PA 6.)

5 Females under 10..(probably Maria, age 10; Esther, age 9; Annie, age 8; Sophia, age 7; and Elizabeth, age 5)

7 Total in household

NOTE - This census record seems to skip one person, Sarah Lightfoot, who would have been about 12 years old. If she were present in the household with all the other young daughters, then the total number of persons would have been 8 instead of 7.

2 Males 5-10..(probably William Lightfoot, 11; Samuel Lightfoot, 12)
2 Males 10-15..(probably John Lightfoot, 15; Daniel Lightfoot, 18)
1 Male 50-60..Daniel Lightfoot..Head..(age 62, should have been in the 60-70 category)

1 Female under 5..(probably Martha L. Lightfoot, 5)
2 Females 5-10..(probably Charlotte Lightfoot, 5; Catharine Lightfoot, 9)
1 Female 10-15..(unknown)
2 Females 15-20 (probably Fanny Lightfoot, 17; possibly Sophia but her actual age was 27)
1 Female 40-50..(probably wife Chaterina Salome Schmidt, about 51)

The ages and names are not quite perfect fits so either the enumeration ages were off or the supposed actual birth years of some of the children are not correct.

Somewhat troubling would be the name of the second female, age 15-20. Fanny Lightfoot fits well into that catagory but there are no other unmarried daughters known to be still in the household other than Sophia who is supposedly 27 years old.

Equally troubling is the possible unknown name of a female in the age 10-15 category.

E-mail from Keith A. Dull:
The first three daughters, Maria, Esther, and Sophia, were baptized at the Steltz Lutheran Church which is on the York County, Codonus Township, and Baltimore County border. (NOTE - Sarah was actually their first daughter and there was Annie who was born between Esther and Sophia.)
