bullet  General Notes:

1851-1852: "The History of Wayne County Ohio, 1878", by Ben Douglas, Robert Douglas Publishers, Indianapolis, Chapter XXVI, page 678, shows that Daniel Lightfoot served as one of the township trustees during the years 1851 and 1852.

----------------------------------------

There is another "Daniel Lightfoot" that appears in the 1880 US Census of Hancock County, Ohio. I have not been able to place him with any family in this tree in spite of the fact that the name "Daniel" appears to be somewhat unique to this tree:

NOTE - His age of 25 means that he was born about 1855. The only other known Daniel Lightfoot born around that time would be the other Daniel Jr. born in 1858, is known to have never married, and is buried in Mulvane, Kansas. At this point, I can only assume that this Daniel Lightfoot in the census is from a totally different unrelated family.

Sumner County, Kansas researcher Della Schafer reveals the following from my 2001 query:
An Andrew J. Lightfoot applied for original land (he is listed in a receipt book, but not in a patent book) in T31S, R3W (Springdale Township), the E half of the SE quarter of section 20, recorded in receipt book C, page 368. He is not shown on that land in the 1883 Edwards Historical Atlas. However, Daniel Lightfoot is shown in the atlas as the owner of the E half and the SW quarter of the SW quarter of section 15 in Gore Township, just SE of Mulvane. Also, in the atlas on an "Advertising Directory" page, is listed "The Kansas Mutual Aid Association, of Mulvane, Kansas" and shows in its list of officers, "L. Lightfoot, Pres." I have yet to find any other reference to the existence or purpose of "The Kansas Mutual Aid Association" but I believe it to be similar to the many social organizations of that time that would financially assist any of their member families in time of need or tragedy.
----------------------------------------

Some researchers incorrectly give the date of Daniel's death as November 26th instead of October 26th. This error was probably made by one researcher and that error has been copied over many times by others using the same data without checking the validity. The obituary published in the local Mulvane Kansas newspaper clearly indicates the date as October 26th.
----------------------------------------

While living in Cedar County, Iowa, Daniel apparently bought several parcels of land:
May 27, 1858: bought from Duncan McLarren, Lot 15; Block 16, Twp 79, Range 3
Jan 18, 1859; bought from John Tarr; part of SW 1/4; Block 3, Twp 79, Range 3
Sep 14, 1865; bought from Sarah A. Davis; Block 13, Twp 79, Range 3
Oct 05, 1909; bought from Duncan McClarren (McLarren ?); Block 16, Twp 79, Range 3
----------------------------------------

bullet  Birth Notes:

There is a minor conflict of Daniel's reported birth date and location. It apparently revolves around the abbreviation for the month: either "Jan" or "Jun" as well as the name of the county in which he was born.

The personally held Lightfoot family history documents give a birth date of 17 January 1811 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania but there is no supporting documentation. Other researchers report a date of 17 June 1811 in York County, Pennsylvania but I have yet to see any of them provide a source citation for this data. Most likely the source for the York County birth location was Daniel's obituary which like all obituaries, was provided by another person and therefore is questionable about the facts. Phyllis Storey-Harrison, a 2nd Great granddaughter of Daniel Lightfoot writes "On a family record which appears to be in his daughter Elizabeth Lightfoot's handwriting, the date 17 Jun 1811 is shown."

• His obituary was published in the Unknown newspapers after 26 October 1895 in Mulvane, KS.

Daniel Lightfoot, Sr. was born in Cumberland county, Pennsylvania, June 17, 1811, and died October 26, 1895, aged eighty-four years four months and nine days. He was descended from English Quakers, who, in the time of George the 3rd were somewhat related by marriage with the royal family. His immediate ancestors coming from England had settled in Maryland from whence their posterity migrated to Pennsylvania, the native state of the deceased.

In early life Mr. Lightfoot was actively engaged in business pursuits but failing health caused a suspension of business activities, since which he has lived quite a retired life.

Mr. Lightfoot removed from Pennsylvania to Wayne County, Ohio, in early manhood, residing there until 1854, coming three years later to Eastern Iowa where he superintended his farm until 1879, when he directed his steps westward again, coming at that time to Kansas, where he found a home and his final repose. He was in early life an active member of the church, but in later life his physical infirmities kept him very close at his home.

He leaves a family of five sons and four daughters, several of whom reside in Iowa.

Rev. A. J. Beltz conducted funeral services in the Christian church at 1 P.M., Monday, October 28th, and the burial was in Mulvane cemetery. A large number of friends attended to pay their last tribute of respect to an honest, unassuming man.

"Ohio, County Marriages, 1789-2013," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XZDJ-S1Q : 10 February 2018), Daniel Lightfoot and Susanna Ansberger, 01 Mar 1838; citing Marriage, Wayne, Ohio, United States, 137, Franklin County Genealogical & Historical Society, Columbus; FHL microfilm.
--------------------------------------------

Susannah and Daniel had a total of 11 children:
7 sons: Jacob (died young), Addam (died young), William, Luke, Lester, Frank, and Daniel, Jr.
4 daughters: Elizabeth, Eunice, Susannah Ida, and Mary Alice.

The deaths of Jacob and Addam are inferred in that their names are missing from the 1850 US Census record plus Susannah's obituary which states that she moved from Wayne County, Ohio to Cedar County, Iowa with 5 children. According to all of the birth dates, she already had given birth to 7 children by the time that she moved to Iowa.
----------------------------------------

1844: Wayne County Ohio Recorder's Office shows a land transfer deed recorded in 1844 from Daniel and Susannah Lightfoot to Levi Grabbill, Deed Vol. 26, Page. 451.
----------------------------------------

Susannah's obituary in the Mulvane, Kansas newspaper states that they first lived in Wayne County, Ohio until 1854 when they moved to Williams County, Ohio. In 1856 they moved once again by wagon to Cedar County, Iowa. In 1879, they moved once again to a farm near Mulvane, Kansas.

Her obituary first says she first moved with 5 children and later added 1 more son and 2 daughters for a total of 8 children. The obituary goes on to state that she is mourned by 5 sons and 4 daughters which totals 9 children. It is unclear why the obituary says that they added only 1 more son when records indicate that 2 more sons were added. Frank was born in Ohio in 1856, and Daniel Jr. was born in 1858. Both Frank and Daniel Jr. show on the 1860 Census of Iowa Township in Cedar County, Iowa, page 145. However, by the time Susannah died in 1904, it may be that Frank had already died, thus explaining why there appears to be no other mention of him in any other documents thus found to date.

The last two additional daughters must be Mary Alice and Susannah Ida because the obituary for Elizabeth Lightfoot Burnett indicates that Mrs. Mollie Farnsworth (which would have been Elizabeth's sister) and her husband of Arkansas City attended the services. The obituary for Elizabeth Lightfoot- Burnett also identified two sisters as "Mrs. Ida Williams and Mrs. Mollie Farnsworth." The obituary for Susannah Arnsberger-Lightfoot does not specifically list the name of Mollie but talks only about the total number of daughters attending the service.

The obituary for Susannah Arnsberger-Lightfoot goes on to state that she died in the home of her "son-in-law", S. G. Farnsworth in Arkansas City where she was cared for by an affectionate daughter. This "affectionate daughter" must therefore be "Mary Alice 'Mollie' Lightfoot-Farnsworth". And therefore the other visiting sister described above must be "Mrs. Ida Lightfoot-Williams".

Females
15 to 20: 1 = (probably Susannah Arnsberger, wife of Daniel Jr.)
5 total in household

The first question to ask is who was named as the Head of the Household. The census record shows "Daniel Lightfoot" but that does not tell us which one of the Daniels that it was. There was the Daniel born in 1768 and the Daniel born in 1811 and they were probably living together at the time of this census. The elderly Daniel was widowed and the younger Daniel was married but with no children at the time. My best guess is that the elderly Daniel was the Head of the Household which means not only was the married Daniel living there with his wife but also some of the unmarried children of the elderly Daniel were also there.

The elderly Daniel one for certain was the listing of the name as Daniel Lightfoot who would have been the oldest male but even then his age was 72 and should have been listed in the next older age group "70 to 79" instead of the group "60 to 69".

The one young female could have been any one of three that fit that age group: Catharine, the wife of Daniel Jr (age about 20), Charlotte (age about 16), and Martha (age about 15). Obviously only one was still at home while the other two were living elsewhere. Another daughter, Sophia, was about 37 years old and did not marry until later that year in 1840. She may have been indentured out or living as a servant with another family therefore is not shown with the family.

However, my feelings are that within this household were Daniel Jr. and his new wife, Susanna Arnsberger who would have been the one and only female. Together the young Daniel and his wife were living with and caring for the elderly Daniel. This is supported by the fact that Susannah was most likely not present with her family according to the 1840 census for her father's household because it shows no females present in Susannah's age category which means she was living elsewhere.

If the elderly male were Daniel, and two of the others were Daniels Jr and his wife, then that would account for 3 of the 5 persons in the household leaving only 2 other males, no doubt brothers of Daniel Jr.

The other male 20 to 29 would have been either John (age 25) or Samuel (age 23). Samuel was probably living with his master as he was indentured out to become a wagon maker so the other male was probably John.

I'm not aware of any young Lightfoot males that fit the 15 to 19 age group; William was the youngest but he was born in 1819 thus making his age about 21 so unless this is a previously unknown brother, I am unable to determine who the young male could have been.

My determinations:
1 - Male 15 to19-------possibly William Arnsberger
2 - Male 20 to 29------John and Daniel Jr
1 - Male 60 to 69------Daniel Sr (should have been in the over 70 age group)
1 - Female 15 to 19---Susanna Arnsberger, wife of Daniel Jr.
