bullet  General Notes:

William appears to remarry after Ida dies in 1908; he shows up in the 1920 US Census in Porter County, Indiana married to "Jessie", who was born in 1886, and with his two daughters from his first wife, Irene, born abt. 1905, and Adelma, born in 1908. Their marriage is sourced in the Indiana Marriage Collection, 1800-1941 (date 15 Aug 1914).

(Source: Claire Chantell [chantell@virginia.edu]; email Feb 2007)

NOTE - I have not been able to locate any such document showing a marriage in 1914. To the contrary, the only document about a subsequent marriage shows a marriage in 1910 to Maggie E. Van Wagnen. Maggie's maiden name was Rodger. In addition, the 1910 US Census shows William P. Lightfoot living with Maggie E. Lightfoot.

Unless William was remarried for a 3rd time to a Jessie, then somehow Maggie's given name became Jessie between 1910 and 1920.

NOTE - The actual census image shows his occupation as what appears to be "Past Able Engineer". I have no idea what the "Past Able" could mean other than the logical "Portable Engineer". The "Engineer" portion was probably a "steam engine engineer", the man who was responsible for the operation of the steam engine typically used to power many farm implements especially during harvest. Several other Lightfoot descendants were "steam engineers". (Brian L. Lightfoot)

NOTE - His birth date is believed to have been in Apr 1853 instead of Apr 1852.

• They have conflicting marriage information of 15 August 1914. 1 It is believed that this marriage date of 1914 is incorrect for the following reasons.

There is a marriage document issued in Porter County, Indiana in 1910 for William P. Lightfoot but the name of the spouse is slightly different than the expected "Jessie" that appeared on the 1920 US Census. That marriage document shows the name of the spouse as Maggie E. Van Wagnen with an age of about 50 born in Georgia. Her father's name was shown as William Rodger making her birth name Maggie E. Rodger.

On that marriage document, the William Lightfoot lists his occupation as engineer which matches his occupation from the 1900 and 1910 US Census records. He correctly lists his father's name as John but his mother's name was given as an almost undecipherable "Ashatich" or perhaps "Alhatich" which is somewhat close to her name believed to be "Atha Ann" even though her name was spelled different in most census documents. William gave his father's birth place as Pennsylvania instead of the expected Maryland and gave his mother's birth place as Ohio instead of the expected Pennsylvania.

The most important piece of information which proves this marriage document to be the correct William P. Lightfoot is that on the document he shows the date of death of his first wife to be 25 Oct 1908 which correctly matches the death certificate issued in Illinois.
