General Notes:
At the age of 15, Mary moved with her parents to Dalton, OH. After she and Samuel were married, they moved to State Road, East Union Township, Wayne County, Ohio purchasing a farm there in addition to a shop, living there for a period of thirty-four years, after which, wishing to retire from active business, they removed to their late residence, South Main Street, Orrville, in the spring of 1883. Their period of married life passing 58 years.
Early in life it had been said of her, "Mary hath chosen that good part which shall not be taken away from her". And she frequently referred to that experience with much tenderness in her declining years, remaining true to her Master and faithful to her church.
Mother Lightfoot was of a modest retiring disposition, being entirely devoted to her family and the comfort of those about her. She considered no self sacrifice too great for others, patient and submissive in all her afflictions to the last. -----------------------------------------------------

• Her obituary was published in the Unknown newspaper after 10 September 1900 in Orrville, OH. After a long and useful life followed by one year of silent suffering from paralysis, Mrs. Mary Lightfoot was called to her reward, Monday afternoon, Sept. 10, 1900. Aged 79 years, 5 months and 14 days. Three daughters, two sons and an attentive physician were present to minister to her comfort during the last week of her illness, and a host of kind friends and neighbors called to pay their last respect to one whom they loved. On Wednesday morning at her late home on South Main Street, her pastor, Rev. C. A. Boory, who had kindly ministered unto her in days past, assisted by Rev. Twinem of the Presbyterian church, paid a fitting and well deserved tribute to her memory and spoke words of rich consolation to the bereaved children from Saint John 11:26 after which the choir sang "Peacefully Sleep" and her sacred remains were borne to rest in the Silent City beside her husband to await the resurrection morn.
Mary Mitchell was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, March 26, 1821. At the age of fifteen, she removed with her parents to Dalton, Wayne County, Ohio, where she was united in marriage to Samuel Lightfoot, Nov. 25, 1841. This union was blessed with ten children, three of whom with their father, preceded her to the better world.
She fulfilled in truth the prophecy of David the Psalmist, "They shall still bring forth fruit in old age".

• She was buried on 12 September 1900 in the Orr Cemetery in Orrville, OH.
Samuel and his wife Mary share one common gravestone in the Orrville Presbyterian Church Cemetery which is a large vaulted top block monument of gray granite. On the front face there is a decorative area with the letters S and L on top of each other. Along the base of the monument carved in relief are large block letters with the name LIGHTFOOT. The inscription on the polished face reads "Samuel Lightfoot 1817 - 1900; Mary, his wife, 1821 - 1900". The Orrville Presbyterian cemetery was also called the "Old Cemetery", and later called the Lutheran Cemetery. It is also known as "Orr's Cemetery" and was founded 1852 by Judge Smith Orr. The cemetery is at the corner of Mill Street and East Church Street in Orrville.

Pertaining to a photograph entitled "Sam Lightfoot's Children" from the Ruhama Esther Burnett estate, Photo courtesy of Phyllis Storey-Harrison:
The photo was part of many letters and photos left in the Mulvane, Kansas area in the estates of Daniel Lightfoot and his children to include the estate of Ruhama Esther Burnett. The photo is unmarked other than the statement "Sam Lightfoot's children". I strongly suspect that this name Samuel marked on the photo would have been Daniel's brother who remained in Wayne County, Ohio when Daniel and Susannah left in about 1856 eventually bound for Iowa and then Kansas.
Because Samuel's third-born son, Smith, died in 1856, this photo must be of Samuel's remaining sons, "Samuel Jr, Francis, & Warren (youngest boy to oldest), and probably his two youngest daughters, Viola & Ella (youngest girl to the oldest). It's not known where the next oldest daughter, Harriet, would have been as she was born in 1851 and did not marry until 1874.
If this photo were taken after her marriage date in 1874, that would mean the boys should be much older. That should therefore date the photo to about 1865-1870 in Wayne County, Ohio. ----------------------------------------
