11 MRS. MARTHA CARR DIES AT TOLEDO

Mrs. Martha Carr, of Toledo, formerly an Orrville resident, died at a Detroit hospital at 8 o'clock Monday evening, following an operation for acute indigestion. She was visiting her daughter, Mrs. Wanda Lind, when she was suddenly taken sick.

Mrs. Carr was born near Paradise, in 1845, and was aged 71 years. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Lightfoot. She was married in 1871 to Jerome Carr. To this union were born three sons and three daughters, all of whom survive her. They are J. E. Carr, Toledo, Charles E. and David C. Carr, of Gary, Indiana; Mrs. R. F. Lytle and Mrs. F. P. Schrag, Toledo, and Mrs. Wanda Lind, Detroit. Her husband preceded her in death by a number of years.

Mrs. Carr moved from Orrville in 1896 to Toledo, where she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. R. F. Lytle. Funeral services were held at the Lytle home in Toledo, Wednesday afternoon. The body was brought to this city Wednesday evening and burial in the old cemetery.

NOTE - This newspaper article was found within the Lightfoot surname folder in the Genealogy section of the Wayne County Library. The article was apparently cut out of the newspaper but no date or name of the publication was provided. It most likely is from the local newspaper of Orrville probably dated around June 14 or 15. The article does not give a specific burial date and only mentions that the body was shipped from Detroit and arrived in Orrville on Wednesday night, June 14th. Arthur Carr provides a burial date of June 16th and a location of Crown Hill Cemetery instead of the "Old Cemetery" mentioned in the article. In spite of the misleading headline, she actually died in Detroit, Michigan as stated in the article. They had a total of 9 children, not 6 as stated in the article; 3 children died in their infancy. The marriage occurred in 1872, not 1871. Mrs. R. F. Lytle was Elizabeth Carr; Mrs. F. P. Schrag was Emma Carr; and Mrs. Wanda Lind (Ling) was Wanda Carr.

bullet  Marriage Notes:

"The Carr Book", by Arthur A. Carr (1947), pp 393-394

"No drab and commonplace life was the life of Jerome and Martha. From their meeting at Mount Union College to his death some twenty years later their lives were crammed with action and excitement.

Their first venture was a Commercial College at Hillsdale, Mich. Then came work as a surveyor and land agent in and around Cincinnati, Ohio. From this Jerome expanded into Colonization activities in Texas with long trips across the untouched prairies. From these trips he brought home to Martha and the children many thrilling tales and wonderful souvenirs such as buffalo pelts and rattlesnake skins.

A later venture in Birmingham, Alabama in the coal business proved without profit so the family went to Saint Louis, Missouri where Jerome engaged in the insurance business.

About 1888 they resided in Carrondolet, Missouri, where Jerome became a Methodist minister in which profession he died four years later while serving a circuit of Churches from Litchfield, Illinois. He achieved marked success as a Minister of the Gospel.

Jerome Carr not only possessed a keen, active mind but an inventive one as well. In 1884 while at Cincinnati he built and patented what was the forerunner of the motor bus. Although it failed to meet requirements due to the crude gas engines of the day it attracted much attention. The family preserved a letter from P. T. Barnum offering to equip his circus with the new transportation if it proved successful. (See under Philonzo D. Carr)

Jerome was a member of the Masonic fraternity and was buried in Cincinnati with Masonic rites. After the death of Martha his body was taken to Orrville, Ohio, where he and his beloved wife lie side by side in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Nine sons and daughters were born to Jerome and Martha. Three of them, Torrence, Samuel and Mary, died as infants. The other six are all considered in the next Generation."
----------------------------------------

Emma's place of birth pinpoints their move to Michigan within the first year of their marriage. Jerome and Martha must have founded their commercial college in Hillsdale sometime between 1872 and 1876. David's birth in Ohio three years later means they left Michigan before 1876, at which point they probably moved to Cincinnati. Arthur Carr says they remained in Cincinnati in 1884.
