Born in Cincinnati, OH in 1882, Charles' family moved to Carondelet, MO, when he was about 5 years old, where his father left the insurance business to become a Methodist minister. The family moved again about 1890 so that his father could serve a circuit of churches in Litchfield, IL. In 1892 Charles' father passed away at the age of 42. Charles was just 9 years old at the time.

After his father's death, Charles, his mother, and his brothers and sisters returned to his mother's home town in Orrville, OH, where her parents were both still living. In 1896 the family moved again, to Toledo, OH, where his mother would remain until her death.

Charles left home and moved to Pittsburgh, PA, where he met his first wife Bess. In 1910 they had relocated to Oakmont, PA, where Charles worked as a book keeper for a roofing company. They lived with Bess' sister Edith and her husband, Charles Ferguson, and Bess' mother Kate.

In 1915 they moved to Gary, IN, where Charles found work as the Superintendent of the Gary Screw & Bolt Company. He would spend 25 years in the industry.

In March of 1921 Charles and Bess divorced. The divorce was turbulent and Charles remarried 5 months later in Pontiac, MI. Charles left Bess and their children and started a new family with Georgia.

In 1930, Charles and Georgia were living in Lakewood, OH, where Charles was working for a steel manufacturing company.

In 1940, Charles and Georgia were living in Chicago, IL. At the time he was a Controller for a Machinery Dealer. Charles remained in Chicago for the rest of his life.

Charles was known for being possessed of considerable artistic talent. He produced studies (portraits) of General MacArthur and General Eisenhower. Charles' four sons served with distinction in WWII. They also possessed much of their father's artistic talent.

Charles married Bess Katherine Cory, daughter of Franklin Pierce Cory and Katherine Ida Francis, on 5 June 1909 in Pittsburgh, PA.1 The marriage ended in divorce. (Bess Katherine Cory was born on 13 July 1888 in Rapid City, SD,8 died on 23 November 1957 in Long Beach, CA 8 and was buried after 23 November 1957 in Long Beach, CA 8.)
