"Betty' was the second of five children born to Kenneth John Carey and Helen Marie Fanning. Like her siblings, she was born in Rockford, IL, and the family moved to Detroit, Michigan at the beginning of WWII. Some of the children worked in factories, and Betty took a job with Woolworth's Drug Store, where she met David Jackson Thornton, a sailor on leave. They were married in 1946 in Detroit, and soon began a life of moving and traveling. In 1948 at San Francisco, California, their first child, a daughter, died at three weeks of age. Afterwards, they were transferred to Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois where their other two children were born in 1949 and 1950. After a colorful life as a Navy wife, Betty died at home in Upland, California of asthma and emphysema. She is buried at Bellevue Cemetery, Ontario, California.
