It appears that Alexander had no children with his first wife, Margaret A. Johnson, and that his second wife, Julia A. Carson, brought three of her own children from her first marriage and some additional grandchildren into the marriage with Alexander. He had no children with his second wife either.

Stranglely, his name appears in the marriage register with his 2nd wife as "Elic J. A. Renton". Perhaps the clerk entering the data on the forms may have heard his name as "Alec" but with a more pronounced "A" due to his Scottish accent thus making sound similar to "Elic". I have no idea where the J. A. initials could have come from.

In the 1920 US Census, Alexander was living with married brother, John, and his family. His marital status was still marked as married. There is a record for a Julia A. Renton, born about 1862 in Michigan, living in Wayne County, Michigan with Charles W. Cassidy and wife Mira. Julia's relationship was marked as mother-in-law but I have no record of a daughter named Mira who was born about 1892. The closest would have been Matilda Savage who was born about 1888 which is very close to the correct age but how does one get Mira out of Matilda? Julia's marital status was also marked as married so if this was the correct Julia, then I suspect the couple was experiencing marital problems and were living apart at the time.
