• His obituary was published in the Winona Post on 7 September 2005 in Winona, MN. Gerald James Adams, 89, of Trempealeau, Wis., passed away Sunday, August 28, 2005, at Marinuka Manor, Galesville, Wis. Gerald was born on the family farm on October 23, 1915, to Earl and Minnie (Shanabrook) Adams in the town of Trempealeau. After graduating from Trempealeau High School in 1933, Gerald worked in the quarry which supplied rock for the building of the Mississippi River dam. He enlisted in the Navy early in 1940, and served in the Pacific Theater for the duration of the war, during which he survived the sinking of the aircraft carrier, USS Hornet. After six years in the U.S. Navy he moved to Alaska and eventually retired in 1970 as an engineer for the Alaskan Railroad. Gerald then moved back to the family farm in Trempealeau. During his 35 years of retirement he enjoyed the four seasons of Wisconsin. Whether cross-country skiing, hiking the river bluffs, tapping maple trees, or tending to his garden, Gerald appreciated all that nature had to offer. Gerald also enjoyed passing on his knowledge and love of nature to friends and family - especially his nieces and nephews.
Locally Gerald was known for his large, well tended garden on Highway 35. His abundant supply of produce was generously shared with his church, family, and passersby. When Gerald couldn't be outdoors, one could find him reading, writing in his journal or listening to public radio. His reading encompassed a wide range of topics and interests. Family members treasure his detailed chronicles of his personal and family history.
Gerald was an active member of the Trempealeau United Methodist Church, a 55-year member of the United Transportation Union, Friends of Perrot State Park, and the National Geographic Society.
Gerald is survived by his sister, Mildred (Pat) Kelley of LaCrosse, Wis.; his sister-in-law, Merna Adams, of Trempealeau; thirteen nieces and nephews; twenty-five great-nieces and nephews; and nine great-great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert and Warren, a sister-in-law, Helen Adams, and three nephews. Gerald will be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit, his simple lifestyle a for his generosity which is evidenced by his wish that his body be donated to the University of Wisconsin Madison Medical School Department of Anatomy.
A memorial service for Gerald will be held on Saturday, September 10, at 11 a.m. at Trempealeau United Methodist Church. Memorials may be directed to Trempealeau United Methodist Church, Christian Children's Fund, and Wisconsin Council for the Blind.
Jerry, we will miss you!
