Willard Hanshew Markey, 93, of East Rockhill Township, Bucks County, formerly of Frederick, Md., and Perkasie, died Jan. 16 in the Lutheran Community, Telford. He was married to Leona (Palmer) Markey for 66 years. He was vice president and secretary of Malmark Inc., Plumsteadville, a handbell manufacturer, since 1974. Previously, he was vice president of marketing and sales for Schulmerich Electronics, Sellersville, 1963-74; director of the Lutheran Community, Telford, in the 1960s; executive director of the Frederick County (Md.) United Fund in 1959; a manager and vice president for Schulmerich in the 1940s and 1950s; vocalist and front man for Joe Stephen's Orchestra, Braddock Heights, Md., in the 1930s and 1940s; and assistant city engineer in the 1940s and draftsman in the 1930s for the city of Frederick engineering department. He was a graduate of Bliss Electrical School, Takoma Park, Md. Born in Washington, D.C., he was a son of the late William and Bertha L. (Zimmerman) Markey. He was a member, councilman, Sunday school treasurer and men's club president of St. Andrew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Perkasie. A pilot, he was a training officer for the Frederick Civil Air Patrol, which he helped found in 1942. A member of the mayor's airport committee, he was involved in the planning and construction of the Frederick Municipal Airport. He was chairman of the East Rockhill Township planning commission, which he helped organize in 1969, township representative to the Pennridge Wastewater Treatment Authority for more than 22 years and a member of the East Rockhill Park and Recreation Board. On its 100th anniversary, the township named a 94-acre community park ''The Willard H. Markey Centennial Park.'' He was a member of the Music Educators National Conference and former director of its Music Industry Conference. In 1980, he was awarded an honorary life membership in the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers Inc. He was a technical director for the Fredericktown Players, Winchester Hall, Md., which he helped found in 1930. He was a member and past president of the Sellersville Kiwanis Club, a craft member of the Church Architectural Guild and its craft committee, and a member of the general advisory committee to the Upper Bucks Technical School.

Survivors: Wife; daughters, Susanne Bensing of Lebanon, Lebanon County, Jane Rivera of Perkasie; sister, Nancy Ackler of Baltimore, Md.; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son. Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday in the church. Graveside services, 1 p.m. Thursday, Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick. Call noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday in the church. Mr. Willard Hanshew Markey, 93, of East Rockhill Township, Bucks County, Pa., passed away Jan. 16 at the Lutheran Community at Telford.

He was the husband of Leona Palmer Markey, his wife of 66 years.

He is survived by two daughters, Susanne, wife of Dr. Jeff Bensing of Lebanon, Pa., and Jane, wife of Edric Rivera of Perkasie, Pa.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and Nancy Ackler, a sister, wife of Richard, of Baltimore.

He was born March 19, 1910 to Willard Markey and Bertha LaRue Zimmerman Markey in Washington, D.C. Mr. Markey grew up in Frederick and graduated from Frederick High School and later Bliss Electrical School, Takoma Park. He studied at the department of Drama at Yale University, New Haven, Conn. In 1930 he was a founding member of the original Fredericktown Players and served as its technical director.

He was an active member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, served on the church council, was treasurer of the Sunday school and was president of the men's club.

When the City of Frederick received a Public Works Administration grant in the 1930s to build a sanitary sewer system, Mr. Markey joined the city engineering department as a draftsman in the preparation of plans and construction of the system.

During World War II, he served as the assistant city engineer covering civil defense and the expansion of the Linganore Water Filtration Plant.

He was a private pilot and in January 1942 a founding member of the Frederick Civil Air Patrol, serving as a training officer.

When Detrick Field was closed as an airport and became Camp Detrick, he was one of the first to point out the need for a new Frederick airport. He was appointed to the Mayor's Airport Committee and worked with that group in the planning and construction of the current Frederick Municipal Airport.

Mr. Markey was active in music and was the vocalist and front man for Joe Stephens Orchestra in the 1930s and 1940s. During the summer season this popular band played for dances weekly at the Braddock Heights Pavilion in Braddock Park.

In the 1940s he resigned his position with the City of Frederick to accept a position as district manager for Schulmerich Electronics of Sellersville, Pa. He was responsible for the sale and installation of electronic amplification systems in churches, schools and public buildings in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina.

Following the death of his son in 1952, he resigned as district manager and accepted the position of vice president of sales and marketing. He moved his family to Perkasie, Pa. He became an active member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, the Sellersville Kiwanis Club, where he served as its president, and he was a member of the General Advisory Committee of the Upper Bucks Technical School. He was a craft member of the Church Architectural Guild of America and its craft committee.

In 1959, he returned to Frederick to become the first full-time executive director of the Frederick County United Fund. In the 1960s he served as a director of the Lutheran Community at Telford, Pa., and was chairman of its board. He rejoined Schulmerich in 1963 as vice president of marketing and sales of handbells to churches, schools and community groups. On April 1, 1974, he retired from Schulmerich after nearly 40 years of association.

On May 1, 1974, he joined Malmark Bellcraftsmen in introducing Malmark Handbells to the music world. He was a member of the Music Educators National Conference, its Music Industry Conference, where he served as a director. In 1980 he was awarded an honorary life membership by the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers Inc. for his contributions to the art of handbell ringing. He served as vice president and secretary of Malmark Inc. from 1974 until his death.

In 1969, he helped to organize a planing commission for East Rockhill Township and served as its chairman and was an active member until his death. He represented the township on the Pennridge Wastewater Treatment Authority for 22 years. He was a member of the East Rockhill Park and Recreation Board. When the township celebrated its 100th anniversary by creating a 94-acre community park, the community honored him by naming the park The Willard H. Markey Centennial Park.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. at St. Andrew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dill and Chestnut streets, Perkasie, Pa. Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. in Mount Olivet Cemetery, 515 S. Market St., Frederick, with the Rev. Philip Fogarty officiating.

Please join the family following the ceremony at Dutch's Daughter Restaurant, Himes Avenue, for a celebration of life gathering.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Willard H. Markey Scholarship Fund, c/o First Savings Bank of Perkasie, 1129 N. Fifth St., P.O. Box 176, Perkasie, Pa. 18944.
