bullet  Birth Notes:

The obituary published by the Topeka Daily Capital on 12 Jul 1914 indicated that Sarah was born near Washington, Indiana but that would be very unlikely. Her parents did not move from Kentucky to Indiana until sometime between 1832 and 1835. With Sarah's birth year being 1828, she most likely was born in Kentucky. Her next two younger brothers, George and Stephen Grow, were both born in Kentucky. Her first sibling to be born in Indiana was John Grow in 1835.

Although there is a badly weathered gravestone for her husband, there appears to be no inscription about Sarah on it nor is there a separate gravestone for Sarah.

9 PASSING OF A PIONEER

Mrs. Sarah Meade, for many years a resident of Shawnee county, died Thursday evening, July 9, at her home at 815 North Harrison street, having been sick less than a week. Although almost 86 years of age she had just returned from a visit to a son in Oklahoma.

The funeral will be held at the Prairie Home church, Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, by Rev. J. D. Zimmerman. Interment in family lot at nearby cemetery.

Miss Sarah Grow was born August 24, 1828, near Washington, Ind., (sic: should be Kentucky) and at the age of 23 was united in marriage to William Coleman Meade to which union were born six sons, the eldest, when but 17, being drowned, one dying in infancy and the other four survive. There were two step-sons, one of which is dead, the other resides in Indiana. The four surviving sons are William Meade of Chetopa, Rousseau Meade of Eskridge, Sentena Mead of Eddy, Okla., and E. S. Meade of Topeka.

After the tragic death of the son, Mr. and Mrs. Meade came to Kansas in 1871, and bought a farm about one and one-half miles north of what is now Menoken.

The country was then a wilderness, but by hard work, sheer pluck and good management, they succeeded in making their home one of the best improved and most profitable in that section of the country. It was through the strenuous efforts of Mr. Meade that the Christian church at Prairie Home was erected. He even remained a devout and influential member of this faith until his death in January 1898.

Mrs. Meade continued to live on the farm until three years ago, when she sold the old home to Mr. E. P. Chiddix and came to Topeka where she remained until her death.

In early girlhood Mrs. Meade united with the Christian church, and during all her long useful life, remained a devout consistent Christian.
The life of Mother Meade (by which she was familiarly known) was an inspiration to every one with whom she came in contact, always kind, cheerful, optimistic, loving and helpful. Mrs. Meade took part in the Mother's day program at the North Topeka Christian church on May 10.
