Notes for George Henry Arnsberger:
It appears from later records that this individual used his middle name in his daily living. His father seems to have done the same thing with his name, most often going by Henry.

Census records of Henry Arnsberger, 1800, 1810, and 1820: Henry Ernstberger lived in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania as early as 1775 where he is found on the tax list owning 130 acres, 2 cows and 1 horse. Also listed is Christian Fox, probably Henry's step-father. Henry left a will naming all of his children. At this time his wife's name is unknown. It is possible he married in York County which was where Christian Fox and Magdalena Ernstberger lived after about 1765. Henry has been found on the tax lists for the years 1775, 1776, 1778, 1779, 1780, 1781, 1782, 1783, and 1798. He died in 1806 and left minor children. The 1809 tax list shows Jacob Arnstberger, Henry Arnsberger and heirs of Henry Arnsberger. The 1810 tax list for East Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County shows Jacob Arnstberger, Heirs of Henry Arnsberger, Henry Arnsberger and widow Hansberger (not sure if this is right family).

In the land records for Cumberland, Christian Ansberger was grantor to Jacob Ansberger (grantee) 2 December, 1812 in East Pennsboro Township of Cumberland County. It appears several of Henry's children went to New York, namely Christopher, John and Frederick. Frederick is found in Ontario, Genesee Township in the 1820 index. Ontario and Seneca counties are right next to each other. Jacob, Daniel and Henry stayed in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Numerous baptism records have been found for children of these three men. That leaves only Peter unaccounted for. At this time very little is known about his daughters.

----------------------------------------

Probate: 03 Dec 1804 Cumberland County, Pennsylvania:
Administrators of Henry's estate were Jacob, his son, and John Wormley, perhaps a son-in-law. Orphans Court Docket #4 records the guardian of his three minor children as David, Nancy and Frederick Arnsberger. The final settlement was made in the year 1812.

Henry bought property from an unknown person 7 July 1774 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. (Warranty of land E. Pennsboro, PA). In 1778, taxed on 35 acres E. Pennsboro, Pennsylvania and taxed again in 1785. Henry was listed as the head of a family on the 1800 Census in E. Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Henry's will was probated 3 Dec 1804 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

Records from the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania for the birth of George Arnsberger 14 Feb 1751, to Heinrich and Maria Arnsberger. This is the same birth date for Henry Arnsberger who died 1804. Believe that this Henry and George are the same and perhaps his name was George Henry after his father or maybe Henry George. Henry died intestate and his wife predeceased him. Some old notes from the Cumberland County Orphans Court in a Pennsylvania Historical Society detailing the disposition of Henry's estate and the assignment of guardians to his minor children. Daniel was assigned John Wormley as guardian. John Wormley lived in Wormleyville, (named for John's father) Cumberland County near East Pennsboro where Henry lived. The house where they lived is still there.

2 males 10-16 years...(not enough info to determine the names)
3 males under 10 years...(Daniel who was 6, not enough info to determine the 2 others. Henry was probably married by 1798)

1 female 26-45 years...(Catharina)
2 females 10-16 years...(not enough info to determine the names)
2 females under 10 years...(probably Mary and Nancy)

Trying to figure out the names to fit in the age categories is complicated and there are some other unanswered questions about the information from the census and the 1804 Probate of George Henry's estate.

1. If there were 3 males under 10 years in 1800, why are there only two, David and Frederick, being named as minors in the 1804 Probate? What happened to one of the other males? Died? Or just a mistake in the census?

2. Why wasn't Daniel who was born in 1794 named as a minor in the 1804 Probate?

3. If the 1800 Census shows 2 females under 10 years and 2 more between 10-16, then why is there only Nancy being named as a minor in the 1804 Probate? What happened to the other females? All died? Or just a mistake in the census? Even if two of them were just 16 in the 1800 census, they would still be minors in 1804.

4. Why are other researchers not including the name of David as one of the children in the family as he was specifically named as a minor child in the 1804 Probate?

The naming of David, Nancy, and Frederick as the 3 minors in the 1804 Probate basically sorts all the children into two age groups: either and adult born between 1774-1783, or a minor born between 1783-1804. With some other known dates of birth, this provides the following chart:

Jacob...born Abt. 1774. He likely the first born son because he was named as Administrator in the Probate.
Christian...born bet. 1774-1783
Henry...born bet. 1774-1783
John...born bet. 1774-1783
Peter...born bet. 1774-1783
Elizabeth...born bet. 1774-1783
Mary...born bet. 1774-1783
David...born bet. 1783-1804
Frederick...born bet. 1783-1804
Nancy...born bet. 1783-1804; Nancy was probably born after 1790 otherwise that census would have shown 3 instead of 2 females
Daniel...born in 1794.

This totals 11 children. There are still some problems with this list and comparing it to the census records of 1790 and 1800.

In the 1790 Census, there are supposed to be 6 males under the age of 16, meaning born between 1774-1790. My list shows 7 names which means one of the names could have been born after the 1790 census or one of the names may have already died by the 1790 census. Or perhaps, the entry of David as a legitimate child is not correct. There is no other information in other census years about Peter so it is possible that he may have been born before 1783 but died before the 1790 census.
