William married Margaret Elmina Robinson, daughter of Jesse Robinson and Mary Clay, about 1870. (Margaret Elmina Robinson was born on 9 March 1847 in North Carolina,^{3 4 5 6} died on 7 December 1920 in Rutherford College, NC ^{6 7} and was buried on 9 December 1920 in Rutherford College, NC ^{6 7}.). The cause of her death was Ruptured pulmonary artery; gastritis.

Easily confused with this family was the un-related William Grant Chapman who married Elizabeth York and Margaret Hoyle. He was the son of John N. Chapman and Phoebe Denton. William Grant Chapman, who was born in 1840 in Burke County, North Carolina, had the following children with his first wife, Elizabeth York:

William Grant Chapman had the following children with his second wife, Margaret Hoyle:

None of these children are part of this particular Lightfoot Family tree. The "real" William "Lightfoot" Chapman is believed to have been married only to Margaret Elmina Robinson. There are no definitive census records for them as a family and their only known children were George Memory Chapman and Ethel May Chapman whose parents names are shown on each of their death certificate. On the 1900 census, Margaret did indicate that she had given birth to a total of 7 children and 5 were still alive at the time. It is unknown who the other 5 children could have been but there is a possibility that she might have been previously married and some of those 7 children could have come from that marriage.

One researcher shows that William Lightfoot Chapman was previously married in 1863 to Nancy Martin and they had a daughter Sarah C. Chapman born in 1844.
