They lived on a houseboat for a few years, and they fished for their food. David served in the Civil War. By 1870, they owned property. Mary Ellen died in 1876, and David married Josephine Mann in 1877.

David and Mary Ellen lived in Anderson, Spencer County, Jefferson and Shelby County in Kentucky before moving to Logan County, Illinois (near Lawndale). One son, Jonas, died in 1865.

According to Mollie McFarland, David O. Alsop lived on a houseboat with wife, Mary Ellen, and at least the last 6 children, with a goat, because one of the children needed goats milk. They fished for their meat for their meals. David also had a drinking problem in his later years.
