Adah Archer ¹

  General Notes:

Determining the death date for Adah is somewhat of a guessing game. Adah gave birth to a daughter, Margaret, in 1846. The federal census of 1850 did not list Adah as part of the household and unfortunately that census did not request a marital status. So at this point it can not be determined if John was widowed or divorced. Additionally, Adah can not be accounted for on the limited data of the 1852 and 1854 Iowa Territorial Census records. However, on the 1856 Iowa Territorial Census, John's marital status is indicated as "widowed". Thus, the only known fact is that Adah must have died sometime between 1846 and 1856. Because she was not listed on the 1850 census and subsequent records, she most likely died between 1846 and 1850.

Her burial location is also a mystery. Most of the family members are buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Fairview Township, Jones County, Iowa but there apparently is no record of her burial there. The first born son, George, who died at the age of 23, is buried in a solo grave with no family members nearby.

Adah married John Ernsbarger, son of John Ernsberger and Mary Smith, about 1832 in Ohio. (John Ernsbarger was born on 20 November 1807 in , Frederick County, MD ^{1 2 3 4 5}, baptized on 27 March 1808 in Middletown, MD,⁴ died on 19 August 1875 in , Jones County, IA ⁵ and was buried after 19 August 1875 in Fairview, IA ^{1 5}.)

John's wife, Adah Archer, was a niece to his sister Anna's husband, Simon Archer.
