• His obituary was published in the West Branch Times on 10 October 1912 in West Branch, IA. Alexander Mackie was born in Alfred, Scotland, Nov 26, 1826, and died at his home in Springdale, Iowa, Oct. 2, 1912, aged 85 years, 10 months and 6 days.
At the age of eighteen he was converted and joined the Presbyterian church at Towie, Scotland, of which he remained a faithful and consistent member until the time of his death. His wife united with the same church at the age of sixteen and they brought their letters from the church in Scotland to America.
Mr. Mackie was united in marriage to Miss Catherine Mortimer, Dec. 1, 1849, at Leochel-Cushinie, Scotland. To this union were born eight children, one of whom died in infancy. The others, with eleven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and the aged wife, remain to mourn his loss.
The surviving children are Elizabeth Reed and Alex Mackie of Minot, N. D., Kate Lightfoot of Sisseton, S. D., Ann Smith and Emma Roberts of Springdale, Iowa, George Mackie of Lourens, Iowa, and Stuart Mackie of Winnebago, all of whom were permitted to be with him in his last hours.
Mr. Mackie, with his wife and two children came from Scotland in 1854 and settled in Scott county, Iowa. In 1869 they moved to a farm near Pedee in Cedar county, and in 1891 they moved to Springdale, where they have since resided.
He was a loving husband and father, a kind and good neighbor, a successful hard working, honest man and was honored and respected by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed in the home and community.
The funeral was held Friday, Oct. 4, at the Friends' church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Ernest L. Gregory. Interment in the family plot in the Pedee cemetery.
