bullet  Death Notes:

Catherine was 92 years old when she died thirteen years after Lester. She apparently was staying with Mrs. Ann Smith in West Liberty, Iowa whose name was noted on her death certificate as "Informant's Name". The 1940 census indicates that Ann was Catharine's sister. The cause of death was listed as "arteriosclerosis", more recently called atherosclerosis, or simply hardening of the arteries.

This 1940 census is unique in that it shows the 3 elderly sisters all living together but their places of birth are different. The oldest, Catharine, at age 87 was born in Scotland. The next youngest was Ann, at age 84, who was born in Iowa as was the next youngest sister, Emma. This indicates that the parents immigrated into the United States sometime between 1853, the birth year for Catharine, and 1856, the birth year for Ann.

The 1900 census for the family indicated that they immigrated in 1854 which fits in with the birth locations of the sisters.

----------------------------------------------

Following the deaths of their two children in 1881, Lester and Catharine both were devastated by the loss. Lester gave up farming and they left Cedar County, Iowa to travel almost all the way across the state to settle into a small town named Manning, in Carroll County, Iowa. There they operated a boarding house for a number of years until 1909. They then moved on to Roberts County, South Dakota where they both operated a small farm for a number of years. By 1920 they were both back in neighboring Muscatine County, Iowa probably to be closer to Catharine's elderly parents who lived less than 30 miles away in West Branch, Cedar County, Iowa. Lester's parents had moved to Kansas and both of them had died by 1904. Many of his siblings had also moved to Kansas with the exception of William and Eunice Lightfoot who had married and were both living in Muscatine.

When Lester died in 1932, he was buried in the small rural cemetery, Pee Dee, near Springdale, where Catharine's parents were buried. When Catharine died in 1945, she also was buried in the Pee Dee cemetery.

She seems to have done extensive research on the Lightfoot family and has more information on the "original" Daniel Lightfoot's wife's family, the Algar/Kennedys. She mentioned in her letter to Yvonne's aunt that she had received much of her information from a cousin, Donna Trapnell in San Diego, California.).
