   Other names for Pernina were Permira Allison ^{9 10} and Pernina Steel.

  General Notes:

There remains a question about Pernina's biological surname. Her own marriage license issued in 1863 when she married Isaac Wing lists her name as Pernina Steel instead of the expected Pernina Allison. The marriage license for her son, John, issued in Dec 1890, lists his mother's name as Pernina Steel. Yet it very clear that the 1850 and 1860 US Census records show her living with John and Maria Allison under the name of Pernina Allison.

There has been no birth record yet found for her under the name of Pernina Allison. Several researchers including those from the Wing family from which Pernina would marry into show her true father's name as Jacob Steel.

There is no mention of what happened to Pernina with her Steel family to cause her to appear with the Allisons beginning with the 1850 US census when she was only 7 years old. It seems that she was "adopted" or at least raised by the Allison family with a majority but not all of her documents showing her surname as Allison instead of Steel.

There is a marriage record between Jacob Steel and Maria Enshbarger/Ershbarger on 29 Jun 1843 in Wayne County, Ohio. Note that this date was about 6 months before the birth of Pernina Steel/Allison. If this were the same Maria Arnsberger that was first married to Jacob Steel and then to John Allison, it would easily explain the two surnames used by her daughter Pernina. There is no record of the date of the marriage between Maria Arnsberger and John Allison so it could have been anytime after 29 June 1843 and the 1850 US Census.

Based on the ages and birth locations of their 3 children at that time, they must have moved about 1866 from Ohio to Wisconsin where their son, George, was born in 1867.

Although they are buried side by side in the same cemetery, the census records reveal that they apparently were divorced with Pernina claiming that she was widowed in spite of the fact that Isaac was alive and enumerated living only a short distance away. The 1900 US Census shows both Pernina and Isaac living in separate residences and each was still listed as being married. The 1905 Wisconsin State Census shows Pernina and Isaac living in different houses but Pernina indicated that she was widowed. The 1910 US Census shows both once again living in separate residence and each indicated that they were widowed. Isaac died in 1915. The 1920 US Census shows Pernina indicating that she was widowed, obviously this time being the truth.
