bullet  General Notes:

He was the son of Jacob B. Arnsberger and Barbara Barnhart. He married the neighbor girl, Elizabeth Ann McClellan, 7 Oct 1858, in York and fathered William Lincoln (b. 02/12/60), John Franklin (b. 05/04/62), Martha Jane (b. @1865), Charles Luther (b. 11/30/68), Mary Lucinda (b. 08/13/70), Clara Elizabeth (b. 05/09/75), Harry Andrew (b. 11/30/75), and James Sylvester (b. 05/27/77). In 1860, he was a farmer living in Warrington Township, York County, and stood 5' 6" tall with brown hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York, PA on 27 Aug 1861, and mustered into federal service there September 19 as a private with Co. H, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry. His brother-in-law, David M. McClellan, served in the same company and regiment. A comrade described Daniel as having "a delicate constitution." He was captured at the battle of Carter's Woods 15 Jun 1863, and incarcerated on Belle Isle in Richmond where he suffered sunstroke. Following his parole, he was ordered to Camp Parole, Annapolis, Maryland, and returned to duty with the regiment 22 Oct 1863. He was honorably discharged in York at term's end 13 Oct 1864.

After the war, he lived near York Springs, Adams County, where he died from the effects of being kicked by a horse he was shoeing.

One source says he was buried at the Mount Olivet United Church of Christ Cemetery, East Berlin, Adams County, Pennsylvania while another says Lower Bermudian Lutheran Church Cemetery, Adams County, Pennsylvania. I'm not certain if those are the same two locations but there is a gravestone for him at the Lower Bermudian Church Cemetery.

NOTE - This census record also puts the birth of Harold before that of Clara otherwise his supposed birth date of November 30, 1875 is only 6 months after Clara's, a time period which can not be correct.

In addition, two young children, Charles and Martha, were not listed as living with their parents. Charles Luther Arnsberger was only 12 years old at the time of the 1880 census; he later was married and didn't die until 1935. Martha Jane Arnsberger was 10 years old at the time of the census; was married in 1883. So where were they in 1880?
