His actual birth date seems to be a matter of controversy. The year of 1823 is the only one which works with both the 1860 and 1870 census yet many researchers give only 1824 which would mean his age on the 1870 census was overstated. The death register page from Hampshire County, West Virginia is very difficult to read but it appears to indicate that his age at death was 47 years which would make his birth year sometime in 1825.
