bullet  General Notes:

Newell was named for the town in which he was born on 14 Jul 1901, Newell, Butte County, South Dakota. He must have spent some time in the military during WW I because in Oct 1920 he spent about 6 weeks at the US National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Hot Springs, South Dakota and was discharged from there on 16 Dec 1920.

He was married to Clara Gimbel on 23 Apr 1924 but that marriage was probably short lasting. He is not found in the 1930 US Census but shows up in the 1940 US Census working as a "snake charmer" for the J. F. Sparkes Shows (Circus). His 1935 residence was shown as San Antonio, Texas to where he returned and died in Big Spring, Howard County, Texas at the age of 53. For some strange reason, his remains were shipped back to where his maternal grandparents lived and were buried. He was buried in the Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk, Iowa.

bullet  Noted events in his life were:

• He has alternate birth information of 14 July 1898.This date appears on his gravestone and is probably incorrect. His name does not appear with his parents on the 1900 US Census when he would have been about 2 years according to this age. In fact, his mother indicated that she had given birth to only 1 child on the 1900 US Census and that was James Erwin Darner. Therefore, Newell's birth date must have been after the 1900 US Census. He appears on the 1905 and 1915 South Dakota State Census with the family and his age provides a birth year of 1901 instead of the 1898 that appears on the grave.
