  General Notes:

There is some confusion about his death date and his marriages. All researchers agree that he married Augusta V. Cross on 3 Nov 1880 in Wapello County. She was only 16 years at the time. She gave birth to a daughter, Nellie, probably on 2 Dec 1881 but the records for that birth indicate that there was no given name at the time. Then about 6 monts later, Augusta died on 30 Jun 1882. There is speculation that she died due to complications from child birth but no official records have yet bet discovered to tie the two events together. Augusta was buried in the Westview Cemetery in Kirkville, Wapello County, Iowa.

James next appears about 8 years later in the 1900 US Census in Yankton, South Dakota married to Ida A. Wright who was 19 years his junior and with a one year old son, James E. Darner. The 1905 and 1915 state census records indicate that James arrived in South Dakota about 1894. Those records also indicate that Ida Wright although born in Ohio had grown up in South Dakota. Therefore, James must have moved to South Dakota, met Ida Wright there and was probably married for a second time at the age of 36 in or near Yankton, South Dakota while his bride was only 17. No marriage records have yet been located but the 1900 US Census indicates a marriage date of about 1895.

Meanwhile, his daughter, Nellie from his 1st wife, was sent to live with his parents where she appeared on the 1900 US Census with them in Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa.

There is a grave in the Calvary Cemetery in Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa for a James Darner with no birth date and a death date of 29 Fed 1914 but since James appears in the 1915 census in South Dakota, this grave cannot be his and must be a different James Darner.
