General Notes:
According to land record book at the library, Andrew John bought land in 1814 and 1819. This from Tina Darner. One source has his middle name as Joseph. Andrew and Hannah had left the farm and were living in Sonora, Ohio by 1857. When Hannah died there were only 2 sons living in Muskingum County, Ohio; Jacob had moved to Illinois and the 5 youngest children to Iowa (although census records show Tamar not there until about 1869). (per Dannell Hopkins, http://www.geocities.com/danni_74932/) ----------------------------------------
From Mary Kiddo's Book: Andrew, third son and fifth child of Jacob and Catharine Darner, namesake of his uncle, was born at his parents' home in the Middletown Valley. He was taught to read and write at school and learned farming with his father. He married 16-year-old Hannah Yost at Christmas season when he was 24 years of age. Hannah was the only child of Ludwick Yost and his second wife Anna Maria (Everhart) of Middletown Valley. Her father had died when she was an infant and her stepbrother John Yost was her guardian. Her mother remarried within several years and Hannah's new stepfather was then appointed her guardian. Andrew and Hannah remained in the Middletown Valley for the first two years of their marriage, during which time John Yost died.
Andrew Darner received a $100 advancement from his father, and he and Hannah moved to Ohio in 1810. On 1 June 1811 he paid a deposit at Zanesville to show his intention to enter the northeast quarter of section two, township one, range six, of the un-appropriated US Government Military Lands. Although he stated his residence as Muskingum County at that time, reference to his being in Columbia County is suggested by a War of 1812 Ohio Militia list.
Receiving the patent on his 166-acre tract in Muskingum County in 1813, Andrew and Hannah established their homestead in Perry Township. The following year he jointly entered a second 160-acre tract in the same township, assigning part of the patent to his brother Jacob. The brothers sold their half of the tract in 1821 to Hannah's stepbrother Jacob Baker of Frederick County, Maryland, and Andrew conveyed the remainder in 1825. As a director of the sixth school district in Perry Township in 1827, he accepted a deed for 1/4 acre of his brother's land on which to build a school. He quit claimed to Jacob Baker his share in his mother's portion of the Maryland homestead. Eighteen years after his father's death, Andrew accepted a mortgage on the remaining 82 acres of Darner patent land in Salem Township then owned by his nephew David Keller of Frederick County, Maryland.
Later in life Andrew and Hannah Darner left the farming of the homestead to their son Joseph and moved into a house in the town of Sonora. In 1857, when Andrew was about 74 years of age, he drew up his will. Devising to Hannah their Sonora house, lot and two other lots in the town, Andrew specified that the home farm be sold within six months after his death, which occurred six years later. His co-executors, sons Isaac and Joseph, completed the sale of the Darner homestead for $3700 in 1870, distributing the proceeds to the nine surviving children and two grandchildren.
Hannah remained in Sonora and died within her ninth decade, with only two sons staying in Muskingum County, Ohio. The rest of the family moved farther west: Jacob to Illinois and the five youngest children to Iowa.
