bullet Marriage Notes:

There are 1870 and 1880 Census reports of a William and Ann Sutton living in Clinton County, Iowa and then Jackson County, Iowa but they are NOT the correct persons.

As proof that they were not the correct persons, the marriage documents from Muskingum County, Ohio are very clear in that William H. Sutton and Ann E. Darner were married in Sept 1867. And this was the correct Ann E. Darner because her age was only 17 at the time and the marriage license references that she had the permission of her father, Jacob Darner. The first problem is that the 1870 Census in Clinton County, Iowa and the 1880 Census in Jackson County, Iowa for a William and Ann Sutton show that their first son was born in Iowa in 1866 about 1 year before the parents were married in Ohio. Those same census records also show a daughter born in Iowa in 1867. In addition, those 1870 and 1880 Census records show that the birth location of Ann or Anna was listed as Indiana instead of the expected Ohio.

Even additional proof that the Ann Sutton living in Jackson County, Iowa was NOT the correct person comes from a 1900 Census, which showed Ann as being widowed yet the real William Harrison Sutton, her husband, did not die until 1922 according to the gravestone photograph shown on Find-A-Grave.

There is only one minor problem with the identity of the real Ann E. Darner, the wife of William Harrison Sutton. Her middle initial appears as "E" on not only the marriage license but on the marriage records of at least two of her children, Burwell Howard Sutton, and William H. Sutton, Jr. Yet the gravestone shows her name as Ann C. Sutton, wife of W. H. Sutton. I suspect that the gravestone merely has her middle initial incorrectly engraved.

Knowing their locations through the years and their children's names and birth dates has proven a little difficult to determine. William and Ann appear to have been missed in the 1870 census, then recorded in the 1880 census in California. They they re-appeared in the 1895, 1900, and 1910 Census in Iowa. Following Annie's death late in 1910, William was missed once again in the 1920 Census.

The only dates and locations that are known are as follows:

1868 - daughter, Ella May Sutton, born in Muskingum County, Ohio
1870 - son, Burwell, born in Muskingum County, Ohio
1880 - census in Butte County, California
1894 - son William Jr. married in Decatur County, Iowa
1895 - census in Clarke County, Iowa
1900 - census in Clarke County, Iowa
1910 - census in Decatur County, Iowa
1910 - Ann buried in Decatur County, Iowa
1922 - William buried in Decatur County, Iowa
