bullet  General Notes:

"John Jacob, seventh son and eleventh child of Francis and Elizabeth (YEAGER) FAST was born in German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, on July 10, 1804, was christened by the Reverend Mr. John STOUGH, a heroic, pioneer Lutheran clergyman who like CHAUCER's a "good man of religion" was "benigne" and "wonder diligent" and "in adversitie fulpacient" as he administered to his communicants "fer asonder" on his wide parish in western Pennsylvania. His devotion to his people and his labors in this scattered community forms an interesting and inspiring chapter in the history of the early Lutheran Church in America. John Jacob FAST was married by the Reverend Mr. Wilhelm Schmidt to Anne Slanker, who was born in Maryland in May 1810. He was a clergyman with a long and notable career. It was he to whom was written by his father in the interesting and affectionate letter quoted on page 178 (See "By Way of Rotterdam, reprint 1983). The following valuable autobiographical, written by him on Christmas Day, 1869, supplies a most constructive life of this devout man. To this sketch a historian of the Nicklaus FAUST family in America owes much. In it John Jacob FAST, who as a child had seen and known his grandfather, Nicklaus, makes the statement that the original form of the family name was FASS. (See other spellings of the name used by Nicklaus FAUST in the chapter devoted to Nicklaus and Cadarina, pages 1-3 "By Way of Rotterdam", reprinted 1983). His statements in the sketch are also the chief authorities for establishing Zweibrucken, Germany, as the ancestral home of the family, and for the belief that Nicklaus and Cadarina were not married until after coming to America. The Judge Bowman, referred to in the sketch as his cousin and the son-in-law of the Reverend Mr John STOUGH, was the son of Katy FAST and Philip Casper BOWMAN. (see Katy (FAST) BOWMAN in "The Daughter of Nicklaus and Cadarina (DANNER) FAUST", pages 35-37 of "By Way of Rotterdam" reprinted 1983). To historians of the YEAGER family, this sketch also is of value."

NOTE - The relationship of Maria Hanke(?) is not known. Some researchers list Sam/Samuel Fast as another son to John and Anna but his birth location of Pennsylvania instead of Ohio indicates that he was not. In addition, the listing of his name on the census came at the very end of the family which usually indicated a person of a different family. His exact relationship is not know.
