bullet  General Notes:

At least one other researcher indicates that Sarah/Sally Howser was married to Ellis Clarke in Spencer County, Kentucky on 13 Jul 1826. Researching her name is complicated by the fact that there were multiple persons all named Sarah, Sally, or Sallie Howser or even spelled as Houser.

Perhaps the best evidence that such a marriage did occur comes from the book "Genealogy of the Houser, Rhorer, Hoover Families", written by W. W. Houser, and published in 1910. After describing the early years of Solomon Houser, it adds the following:

He later married Mrs. Sallie Clark, daughter of John and Polly (Arnspiger) Houser, who was the companion of his declining years and he preceded her in death. Died September 15,1874.

That statement would seem to validate the marriage between Sarah Lilly Howser and Ellis Clarke. She was either widowed or divorced from Ellis Clarke and was remarried to Solomon Houser.
------------------------------------------------------------------

Sarah was originally born in Kentucky, probably Jessamine county, but was married to Ellis Clarke in Spencer County, Kentucky. According to the recorded marriage bond document and the census data, it appears that Sarah was only 14 years old when first married. It is believed that their first 5 children were all born in Kentucky but by 1838, the family had moved to Logan County, Illinois where her youngest child, Ellis P. Clarke, was born in 1839. Shortly before the birth of Ellis Jr., the father Ellis Sr. died in nearby Tazewell County, Illinois.

Sarah was remarried to Solomon Houser about 1841 who had recently lost his 2nd wife. This marriage took place in either Illinois or Kentucky. The 1850 US Census shows them living in back in Spencer County, Kentucky.

By 1860, they had moved back to Logan County, Illinois where both of them lived out their remaining years. Solomon was buried in Logan County next to his 2nd wife. The burial location of Sarah is not known.
