I have a letter from my aunt, Jennie Shuey Lantz, dated in Jul 1981 where she told me about her uncle, Stephen Shuey, son of Hiram and Emma Shuey. At about the age of 7 he became deaf from a childhood disease. He was very spoiled and attended Gallaudet College in Washington, D.C. Later he taught at the school for the deaf in Fulton, Missouri for a few years. He left that job and began farming northwest of Newtown, Missouri. He had a daughter that died at the age of 21 of tuberculosis, she had a daughter about a year and half old at the time. Stephen died in the late 1920's in Missouri. Stephen had a very large library at the time of his death and I have some of his books that I inherited from my Aunt Jennie. I don't where he is buried or his exact date of death.

He died on 1 Apr 1934. His wife's name was Hannah Shankweiler and she died in 1920.

NOTE - If his birth date was 12 Feb 1867, then his age should have been 63 instead of 62. Due to poor handwriting on the original census form, the surname is sometimes indexed as Shacy instead of Shuey.

Stephen married Hannah Shankwaler, daughter of Jonas Shankwaler and Sophia, about 1910. (Hannah Shankwaler was born in 1864 ⁵ and died in 1920 ⁵.)

"Hi Brian, I found some more information regarding Stephen Shuey's wife, Hannah. According to the 1880 Federal census, Hanah Shankwaler (age 17, born in Penn), was born in 1863, the daughter of Jonas Shankwaler, (born @ 1828 in Penn) and Sophia Shankwaler (born @ 1830, in Penn) The alternate spelling you have listed is based on information from the Missouri School for the Deaf, Fulton, Missouri newspaper. According to the 1920 census, Stephen and Hannah have a daughter, Sophia, born about 1911, age 9. She is not in the 1930 census and Stephen is a widower. According to two of my aunts, this child, Sophia, died when she was about 11. So, I checked Missouri death certificates and can't find Hannah, so I'm assuming she died after the 1920 census."
