Hello everyone,
I have some updated, verified, information for your Shuey branch of the family tree. My mother had told me that Hiram Shuey, her grandfather, had four wives and that the wife and children had all died. I couldn't find four wives for Hiram and figured the story just wasn't accurate. She also said he had gone out west, possibly Colorado and the family died from fever. I had another person send me an article written about Hiram in the 24 Feb 1910 edition of the Sedan Times, Sedan, Kansas, he was 95 at the time. He was living in Sedan with his daughter Belle Busby when he died in 1919 at the age of 103. Hiram was married four times, these are the wives according to the interview in the paper: Anna Berry, married in 1839, near Lancaster, Ohio then they moved west to Coles County, Illinois where Hiram bought about 3500 acres for $1.25/acre. Anna and the three children died there in 1840. I'm assuming they had one child and she died of complications from child birth when she probably had twins. (This is my speculation) I couldn't find Hiram in the 1840 census so did some more research playing around with the name spelling and found him in Coles County, Illinois under the name of Hiram Shavey, wife and male child under 5. In 1841 he began teaching school in the Blakesburg district, Putnam County, Indiana. In 1842 he began teaching in the Hawcreek district near Ladoga, Montgomery County, Indiana. That same year he was married to Sophia Dean who died five months later. On 8 Feb 1844 he married Clarissa Mills and had five children by her. Here again I couldn't find Hiram in the 1860 census but did find him in 1850 living next door to his father Henry Shewy and step mother Elizabeth. In the 1860 census his name was spelled Hiram Shuvy. Listed with him was wife Clarisa, age 36, Henrietta age 13 (probably named after her grandfather Shuey), George W., age 8, Mary R., age 11 (probably named after her grandmother Shuey, Mary Kettick-Cadiek-Rettich) Benjamin, age 4. They are in Lindly, Sullivan County, Missouri. In the 1870 Census there is an additional child, Sarah, born about 1862, she is not listed in the 1880 census. Clarisa died in 1862 and on 25 Oct 1863, he married Emma Logan (my great grandmother) of Montgomery County, Indiana. They had six children, as follows:
---Stephen Shuey, (13 May 1867, Indiana - 1 Apr 1934, Missouri) married Hannah Shankweiler, who preceded him in death, I think he was married previously because he is listed in the 1900 census as living with Hiram and Emma and is listed as a widower. He is buried in the Brantley Cemetery next to Hiram and Emma. Recently my cousin and I erected a small stone for Stephen and Hannah, once we got verification he was buried there from his death certificate.
---Alexander Shuey, (25 Apr 1869, Indiana - 11 Jun 1951, Clearwater, Minnesota) married first Diane unk and second Lenora McDonald, 8 Oct 1901, Triplett, Missouri.
---Jemima Belle Shuey (31 Mar 1871, Mercer County, Missouri - 26 Aug 1962, Sedan, Kansas, Greenwood Cemetery) married Ora Madison Busby in Mar 1892, Mercer County, Missouri. They had three children, Lulu Belle, Virgil, and Gay.
---W. Bert Shuey (16 Apr 1874, Mercer County, Missouri - died after 1930, listed in census in Nebraska) married Delia unknown. He had two sons that I know of: Stephen Alexander born about 1899 and George born about 1903 (according to the 1920 census, Chariton County, Missouri) who were working in a dry goods store in Triplett, Missouri. According to Stephen Alexander Shuey's WW I draft registration card he was born 18 Dec 1899 and they were living in Anita, Cass County, Iowa in 1918. ---James Logan Shuey (19 Feb 1877, Mercer County, Missouri - 14 Mar 1929, Chillicothe, Missouri) was married to Cora J. Henning 16 Nov 1902. They had one son, John born about 1906 who married Bessie Eaton (30 Oct 1905 - Aug 1987) of Sullivan County, Missouri. John and Bessie had only one son, John J. Shuey (12 Jul 1932 - 4 Feb 1999, Savannah, Missouri) he never married and didn't have any children. ---Elias Shuey (1 Mar 1881, Mercer County, Missouri - 20 Mar 1971, Putnam County, Missouri) married Katie Barkley 18 Feb 1902, Lucerne, Missouri. They had eight children, seven living to adulthood. Please remove J. Joel Shuey from your records. I just couldn't place him and couldn't find info to verify his existence. I went back to the Newtown, Missouri cemetery and walked it several times. I finally figured out that J. Joel was buried closer to the Walker head stone then the Shuey head stone. When I looked up J. Joel Walker in the census there he was in Sullivan County. Looking further I found James Logan and Cora Shuey buried on the other side of the Shuey head stone. It was just the placing of the foot stones were not accurate. So J. Joel Shuey doesn't exist and never did!! So in conclusion, Hiram had four wives, children by three, 14 children in all, 11 whom we have names and approximate ages.
I hope this helps clarify some of your research. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. I posted information in 2001 on Ancestry.com about Hiram and it's not accurate but I can't remember how to edit or erase it completely.
