Abner Fast of Near Haviland Succumbs

Abner D Fast, 80, a retired farmer who lived on-half mile east of Haviland, died at 3:30 PM Wednesday in St. Joseph's Hospital in Fort Wayne. Cause of death was complications following an extended illness.

Mr. Fast's wife, Edna, died several years ago.

The deceased was born in Mercer County in 1872. He had lived for many years near Haviland, where he operated a farm and also a gas station, the latter in Haviland.

Surviving are two daughters and four sons. They are Jennie Fast, at home; Mrs. Opal Dangler of Lima; Clair Fast, at home; Paul Fast of Petersburg, Ind; Abraham Fast of Grover Hill; and Gaylord Fast of Van Wert. There are 12 grandchildren surviving.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday in the Baptist Church of Haviland. Burial will be in Blue Creek cemetery in charge of the Didrick Funeral Home of Grover Hill.

Friends may call at the family residence after noon Friday

Abner and his wife, Edna, share one common gravestone along with two of their children whose names are inscribed on the base. The monument is a gray granite with a polished vertical face. The inscription reads "FAST - Abner D. 1872 - 1953; Edna F. 1879 - 1948". Below that it reads "In Civil Service for 33 years". Along the base, it reads "Cleo V. 1896 - 1896; Oscar C. 1897 - 1916".
