James was an employee of the Minnesota State Department of Weights and Measures, and the Truck and Hopper Scale Department. This was during the period October 20, 1911 to February 16, 1932 when he retired. Previous to this, James was a carpenter, a farmer, was employed by Van Dusen Grain Company doing repair work on country elevators, the Interstate Terminal Elevator Company and the Interstate Grain Company. James traveled extensively.

The name of James and his daughter, Mildred, appear on a ship's passenger manifest that sailed from La Havre, France to New York in 1936. Apparently, after his wife died in 1931, he and his daughter took a vacation trip to France.
