Ella May Ferrington was the daughter of John C. Ferrington (his second marriage) and Ella E. Oldham (her second of five marriages - divorced all but her fifth husband). Ella was born in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa on 17 December 1884, and married Charles Levi Lightfoot on 5 June 1899 in Burlington at the age of 14. She was the mother of 4 children, including an infant daughter that died at the age of 3 days in 1906. Ella died 1 September 1937 in Burlington and was buried at Burlington Memorial Park cemetery.

Ella was survived by her husband Charles Levi; her son Charles William; daughters Mrs. Ellen Louise Cline and Mrs. Mildred May Morgan; brothers George, Archie, and Lee Ferrington; half-brothers Frank and William Raines; half-sisters Mrs. Etna (Robbins) Franzen and Mrs. Mary (Ferrington) Beason; and three grandchildren. She was preceded by her parents, her daughter, three brothers, and a sister.

Ella seems to have been only 14 years old when she was married to Charles. Charles and Ella lived almost all of their married life in or around Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa except for a brief period of time when they moved to Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska for unknown reasons sometime between 1918 and 1920. Their oldest daughter, Mildred, went with them and appears with them on the 1920 US Census in Nebraska at age 18 and un-married. Within the next year or two, Mildred would meet Willie Edward Smith and she gave birth to a daughter, May Elizabeth Smith, in 1922 who was born in Nebraska. By 1930, then entire family including Mildred, who was then divorced, and her young daughter had moved back to Burlington, Iowa. Ella died in 1937 and Charles remained in the Burlington area until his death in 1948.
