Upon her mother's death in 1916, Helen took on the role of raising her two younger sisters, Vera and Eunice, while her father continued working to maintain the home. After her husband's death in 1934, she went to work as a secretary in the law office of Robert McDowell. He allowed her to begin a mimeographing business there, as well. Eventually, the business developed enough that, in 1939, she moved into her own office, naming her business "Commercial Service Bureau." Expanded the business to include offset printing with son, Richard. Upon the illness of her 95-year-old father, Earnest Spencer, she had a room added to the back of the house at 455 Roe Avenue, Elmira, New York and moved the business there. Altogether, Commercial Service Bureau lasted 50 years.
